DOK prep blog: Mandrell Dean's son trying to get D-1 offers

  • (this kid played at Heritage Hall, by the way. I never knew much about Mandrell Dean's death, but I remember he was a big deal while still in high school)

Quintaz Struble still awaiting a Division I offer; Big story to come Sunday

Posted by Jason Kerseyon January 13, 2012M at 11:54 am

Heritage Hall senior Quintaz Struble, an Oklahoman first-team All-State defensive end, got an offer this week from Emporia State, an NCAA Division II school in Kansas, and also has an offer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, a junior college in Miami.

Struble had offers from Arizona and Colorado State, but both schools went through coaching changes that put his offers on hold.

He plans to take a visit to Wyoming in the next couple of weeks, and is still holding out hope that an NCAA Division I school will make him an offer before National Signing Day on Feb. 1.

One goal Struble has achieved is becoming academically qualified for Division I football. It was a mission that was personal for Struble.

Millwood legend Mandrell Dean, who committed to Oklahoma in 1993 but was unable to qualify academically, is Struble’s father.

The inability to qualify at OU began a rough life for Dean that ended tragically in 2007.

Be sure to check out Sunday’s Oklahoman for a big story on Struble, his mother, his father’s legacy and what motivates him.

Never knew he was Mandrell Dean's son. Mandrell was a year younger than me in high school(went to different schools) and he was a tremendous talent. I always wondered what might have been if he ever made it to OU. He was in the 1993 class with James Allen, Tyrell Peters, Jerald Moore, etc.

I know Dean got a tryout with the Packers and in the CFL with Saskatchewan but didn't make it. I believe he had a brief stint in the Arena League as well. Sad story of an individual that got wrapped up in a dangerous lifestyle.

Thanks for sharing the post NMSooner80 !

  • Mandrell was an unbelievable talent. The best high school player in OKC for many years. He did play in the CFL some and the Arena leagues. He never was eligible to play in college. An absolute man among boys while he was in high school. He was murdered a year or two ago. There was an article in the DOK at the time but not the sports page. He definately traveled in circles most of us aren't familiar.

Quintez is a very nice young man and has played great for Heritage. Unfortunately he had an ACL injury I think as a soph and this year hurt his MCL.
