Crowd noise

  • I know the Bleacher reports are garbage but they have a report that we are not listed in the top 30 stadiums for crowd noise. Why is that ? Maybe because OU fans are spoiled over many years of being Great ? I live in Eugene and the stadium is half as big as OU but louder because these fans have NEVER WON. Just curious on what you fans think the reason we are Not respected when we have the Best winning record at home for years.

  • Not trying to be mean or insensitive, but we are spoiled a little and we have an older fan base in the stadium than I think some places have. Maybe I'm completely wrong here but, just how I see it.

    oumodguy

  • the problem is we don't spend most of the game with our backs turned away from the field screaming obscenities at the opposing teams fans that's why we don't get rated higher on crowd noise. if we could only be obnoxious a-holes like in the sec we could be rated higher.

    boomersooner53

  • I think for top flight opponents, we are as loud as any stadium in the country. 2008 Taco Tech? Friggin' rocked the socks off the college football world. Nebraska 2000? A glorious return to dominance highlighted by an excellent crowd. 2007 Mizzou, same excellent crowd.

We have to keep in perspective that when we Sooner fans travel alongside our team, we're bringing the best tradition in nation and a Top 10 Rank along for the ride. We experience our opponents' crowds at their absolute BEST! Meanwhile, we come home and play Kansas/Iowa State/Taco Tech and wonder why our crowd can't get into the game.

I'm not under the illusion that our homefield advantage is the best in the nation, but it's clearly top 10 and the premium games from the past decade prove it.

Sooner fans cheer and go wild to "Jump Around" by House of Pain during OU's game versus Texas Tech in Norman, OK. Chime up!!

  • I think Most Oklahoma fans that go to the games are very relaxed and go to watch the game.. spoiled? im not sure thats the word I would describe it.. maybe, seasoned, or content.. the stadium does get loud though and at times very loud. of course most want ot to be like the crowd of thunder basketball.. it wont, however, we have only lost a handful of games over the last 12 years and if these polls are going on home record, then our stadium has to be a top 5 when it comes to home field advantage which included our crowd!!! problem is, the crowd leaves when we blow a team out, and at times, gets caught up watching the game rather than getting caught up cheering!!

I agree with that, Oregon is also classless but very loud. If we could be like we were versus Tech a few years ago, it would be great because we have a great team to root for. I am going to the Utep game, how many fans do you guys think we will have ?

    sooners85

  • Chances are (IF THAT IS TRUE) it has much to do with stadium construction and field lay out. I really doubt if the average age of our fans watching a game is much different from any other school. That being said - - isn't it nice to be a little spoiled and winning games is not all that unusual!? I have noted that where you are seated has MUCH to do with the sound level you experience.

    SoonerPsych

  • We are smart, we're loud for big games. Tech fans still talk about 2008! No one gets hyped for Iowa State or Baylor, that's just the reality of it. I'd rather be classy and at times not as loud, than be OSU or LSU fans, and definitely Oregon. I guess we could throw quarters at cheerleaders too and move up the list.

Oregon is loud because of their bowl construction. If we had a bowl like that you wouldn't be able to hear yourself in it.

    Yep

  • I'll say this too, OU fans on road games are really loud! I've been to a bunch of road games and every time I'm impressed with our fans noise and numbers we bring.

    SoonerSeif

  • OU fans are not loud, home or away. I have been to a lot of games all over and we aren't loud...bleacher report is partially correct. I would imagine we would fall outside the Top 20 but somewhere in the 20's. Quite a few from the Big 10 & SEC as well as a couple of schools from PAC and ACC are louder. I still think we are not 30+.

We have had a few moments, but a game here and there does not a trend make.

    albsooner

  • It doesn't help when 25-30% of the crowd files out at the end of the third quarter

Maybe you should attend a decent game. And please name those pac and acc schools. In the Pac its Oregon and that's it, we are louder than every other school there, by far. In the acc, who? Maybe VT? We are much louder than FSU. I lived in Florida for 5 years and not only did they never fill the stands but weren't loud when they were filled. No one else in the ACC has any fan support in football.

In the Big 10, you have Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin (even though they struggle to sell out Camp Randall) Nebraska and that's it. People knock Michigan every year for not being loud.

  • Stuck nailed it, it's all about the opponent. When we're playing in a highly anticipated game against a stout opponent, our noise level holds its own against any stadium in the country.

Most of our home games are uncompetitive woodshed spankings. I'm not complaining about that by any means, but there's no doubt that when it comes to crowd noise, comfortable fans are quiet fans.

Keep in mind that we never have the pleasure of hosting our biggest rival. If the Horns were ever to step foot on Owen Field, the author of the list would quickly reconsider his rankings.

  • Crowd noise sucks because we have a band that cant motivate us.

Maybe a band made up of 100 air horns would improve the noise level? sarcasm

Seif..we may see things a little different. I have been to many a decent game at OU. I didn't trash OU, rather I think OU is pretty loud and we have our moments where we are really loud. I placed us in the 20's. I think some of it is outside our control and most of it is the fan demographic and the "spoiled" attitude. Bama gets 100k for a spring game for a point of reference. They could be spoiled yet choose not to be.

PAC..you got it Oregon is the best there and Washington has a great crowd. They have the loudest recorded decibal level.
ACC...Clemson and Vtech. FSU is no slouch and has some similarities to us in that they are sometimes very loud e.g. against us, they had moments where they were disruptively loud. Your comment about
Big 10 From top to almost bottom, they are stacked from a fan base perspective. Heck, Iowa and Mich. St. could also be mentioned on top of your list.
SEC...the best of them all. A handful of extremely loud and loyal fan bases at their games.

I think the B12 is arguably tied for 2nd but probably the 3rd loudest conference. At some B10 and SEC games, more fans are tailgating than go inside the game. I was at a Penn State game where 150k people were tailgating. The area was as large as a campus. It was incredible. Notre Dame is a pretty cool environment too...a lot of history.

I really like OU's gameday atmosphere, but it is limited a bit.

    albsooner

  • OU fans get loud at times but is annoying when OU is behind in a close game and fans are sitting on their hands and generally failing to stay in the game. It does not happen often but when it does OU fans often disappoint.

You think its lame because youre probably one of the quiet ones. A good band will keep a crowd moving and jumping all game long. A good band makes the team move and jump all game long. We need more from the band and more chants to make the crowd move together. Not the jump around song. Thats a once in a lifetime thing. Look at Michigan last year in that night game. It was nuts. Thats what you want. Good game, but chants like that keep people involved. The band can initiate that stuff.

How about we start this now. How about everyone bring white or crimson poms to the RRS this year. One side would be burnt orange, the other crimson and cream poms going nuts all day long. What say you and everyone else? Lets pin a thread to make sure everyone knows to do it.

  • Oklahomans are generally laid back people. I think if they would close the south endzone it would be very loud. loudest stadium I've ever been to was Notre Dame stadium. Not as big as I thought but very loud and it is close on both ends.

    royfan

  • I am not bothered that OU is not known as being a loud stadium We are spoiled. For those of us who know what a great line coach Gomer Jones was, we have seen many, many great Sooner teams. I will yell when I feel it appropriate. I do not yell when we play poorly, like against TTech last year. When we played TTech three years ago, I was as loud as anyone in the stadium. I was very loud during Red October in 2000, especially in the Nebraska game when we got behind. I have never felt like the crowd has to be loud for the team to play well. If that is the case, we will never play well on the road. Players need to play, period. Fans can be a factor, but talent usually wins. Our stadium is not conducive to being particularly loud. But I bet Baylor would change with us if they could. In some stadia, the sidelines are so close, the crowd is on top of the players. In others, like the Rose Bowl, players often feel that they are playing in a vacuum, despite a crowd over 100,000. The stadium sweeps back away from the field and it is difficult to create noise.
