Why? I assume that you agree with me that we're down a bit in both quantity and quality for the 2012 class. How did we get so far behind that we have to try and sway commits from other teams; you'd hope that the teams were Texas, Alabama, USC, Ohio St, Florida, A&M even (this year), but those even go to the tune of Arizona, Wisconsin, New Mexico, etc. Why? Why do I feel as if we've had to lower the bar so to speak the past five years, this year more than ever since we've swung and missed on 1/2 or more of the national kids that we've gone after and now are looking towards either commits at other schools or JUCOs?
How the hell did we get so far behind in recruiting? Interesting that UT is behind also- we may have to go up against them for some remaining players, and that hasn't worked out for us very well, going straight-up against them in recent years. One thought that comes to mind is family perks or even outright cheating. Are alumni at other schools laying down better offers, employment, vehicles, vehicles for mommy and daddy, homes, et. al. to the point that they are beating us in other aspects besides football? Or, did we get a bit lazy or fat and happy on our recruiting? Combination? Sure, we can say that the kids these days don't care about tradition, or want cool unis up at Oregon, or want to hang out at Venice Beach after class, but some of the current studs on our team didn't. I'm sure that we have nice flat screens like up at OSU, and have a super nice dorm that's under construction that should rival any in the country. It's something else.
I'd like to hear your thoughts. I'm not prem member but thinking about rejoining. Not sure if the board allows me to see all responses; please chime in.

Playing golf, getting ready to play golf, or just finished playing or practicing on the range.
Not all, but some on the staff got lazy. Pretty much put their hopes into one or two recruits. They went elsewhere and now he's scrambling!
There are two others that want to take the National approach. and unfortunately they just aren't good enough at recruiting to do that.
I'll call out Kish here and say that I really believe he'll do better his second season?
Bob made it pretty simple after the KSU game. He said recruit better.
Well we all are pointing fingers at Shipp. I think I may have been the first on here to say that it appears he's taking four or five years off, outside of one good player signed. We've consistently lost out on our top DL targets, when we all think that given our recent past with Tommie, GK, etc. we'd get one or two anyway. (The Mario Edwards thing last year, Jeffcoat, others). However, it's not him. What has Kish, Patton, and Kittle done lately? Bobby Jack has done pretty well this year I think, and done some great stuff at positions other than DE so we can't include him in the list...but the others I think we've got some problems there.
One-Half of the entire coaching staff is not doing well in recruiting, basically, so we subsequently have a half-ass class ranked 30 something right now on Rivals.
Yea Bob told Kish I'm sorry you were left with no talent to work with, but it's up to you to fix it. Kish currently has more starting LBs in the NFL than BV does. You can't judge Kish ability to recruit or coach until his players are on the field. BV missed on Wort, Nelson, Bird, Ibiloye, Favors, Lindley & D. Franklin. That's not the sign of a great recruiter to me.
"With Nebraska trying to leave, we felt like we needed to send them out with a loss, and we did." -Ryan Broyles-
Kish has a nice opportunity this year though. He's been here how long now? Who do we have coming in at LB at this point, I'm not even sure?
It's to early in his time at OU to jump on Kish for LB recruiting. If things don't improve in next year's class, then I'll be more concerned about him as a recruiter.
Jackie Shipp, on the other hand, is failing miserably at recruiting. It seems to me, he makes contact with a handful of recruits and thinks they're going to commit to him / OU eventually and then completely stops recruiting other players. Jame's comments in another thread about no DT last year was the plan, then JS should have been on the No. 1 & 2 high school DTs in the country for this year. He should have had a huge lead on all other recruiters, but instead he took Manning for granted and stopped recruiting. Now he's scrambling around offering anyone he can get in front of and it shows...
I agree for the most part on Kish. On the other hand, all we heard about (or at least I did) was the contacts that he has/had on the west coast, but have yet to see these connections come to fruition. Maybe they will, but no sign of so far this year.

So how many years do we have to wait to bash on Kish for not recruiting well?
Bash away now if that's your opinion.
So Mastro is now not a big deal? The second we get a commit they're forgotten.
I think you proved our point. I like Mastro and I'm glad he's committed but a big deal he is not. He's a 3 star according to 24/7, rivals, and scout. He has offers from a&m, arkansas, baylor, and colorado. When you rave about him it just reinforces our concern about this recruiting class. In a typical Stoops class, he would be average to below average yet, in this class, he is a big deal.
How do you figure he isn't recruiting well? None of his recruits are even on campus yet. For all you know they could turn out to be one of the better groups of the Stoops era. Stars don't mean a damn thing just look at Wort and Nelson a 4 & 5 star and they both are below average.
This is very true. For being a LB coach, Venables sure sucked at recruiting LB's during his last several years at OU. The strange thing is that it isn't like he tried to get other, better recruits who turned him down forcing him to settle on the above-named players. That didn't happen. These are the guys that he recruited. They're who he wanted. With the exceptions of Wort and Nelson, none of them were highly touted recruits. We were told time and time again that they were diamond-in-the-rough types of guys. Well, he was partially correct. They were rough, alright, but more like chunks of garnet than diamonds.
I never thought MASTROGIOVANNI was a big deal (sorry caps, copy/pasted) anyway...does have some nice offers: ND, Clemson, UCLA, a few others. Probably a nice get and may be a good player for us. Hopefully not a Franklin or Bird.
I'm a real adult fan, not like all you other spoiled babies. You don't know anything about me, but I can make wild accusations about you.
If the B12 continues to let UT pull the strings and we don't expand eastward, look for more difficulty in recruiting. The expanding conferences are the hot destinations right now while the B12 is struggling to survive. At least that's what recruits are being told.
We have a tough conference but many recruits just see Baylor, KU, Tech, KSU, and Iowa St and say, "no that's not really an intriguing schedule compared to A&Ms.
The recruits won't care how much more money that 10 schools get versus 12 because they don't get any of it anyway.
If you wanted to see OU regain it's historic edge, it would have to have been done by beating A&M to the SEC punch. That would have done it. Think we recruit California well now? Think if we were in the SEC and the furthest West school?
As of right now we are losing 2-3 games a year, we could do that in the SEC and sure have better venues and better recruiting. We played it scared and if we don't make a big move soon this conference is going to be irrelevant. We can't bank on TCU, KSU, and WV to pull us up. They are going to slide too.
Four years it is then.
Mastro had an LSU offer too. They pulled it after the got another LB commit.
Gotcha. Sounds like pulled because they weren't able to offer more linebackers, not because they thought of him less.
