the most gullible guy around or another Armstrong. Has Oprah invited him to come on her show yet to spill the beans? If he is so stupid to fall in love with a non-existing girlfriend, I know the sports agents are wetting their chops to represent this guy. Either way, his draft number will fall due to character or IQ issues.
I will think outside the box a bit and guess that he was hiding a relationship with another individual.

RT @SportsCenter: Former ND teammate tells ESPN's Bob Holtzman many players knew Lennay Kekua wasn't really Manti Te'o's girlfriend

Couldn't he have always just clarified that he didn't physically meet her? Was that asking too much when all this praise was heaped upon him for playing through his personal tragedies. I'm not saying he didn't form an emotional connection with this person (or imaginery person) but couldn't he have been a little more straightforward?
In an October interview, he said he "met" her. Couldn't he have said "I met her online"?
Or maybe that was embarrassing to him and things kept rolling?
That's who I am... a Sooner.
Could be gay
"The way I figure it, everyone takes a beating..."
This is a very weird situation - especially given that he is a collegiate football player. I am doubting that he would really need to "go online" to find a relationship.
I will be charitable and suggest that a little white lie on Tao's part may have snowballed as the story was hyped by media and his school. I DO wonder what he did with her game ball?
If you fell in love with someone you only knew from the interweb would you really tell anyone that's all you know about her? That would be embarrassing but turns out not as embarrassing as everyone finding out she's fictitious. I know a guy who sent $3000 dollars to a hot chick in Russia. Never heard from that Russian dude again. Face palm. Then he told me about it. Double face palm.
did you ask him what he thought would happen?
This guy got duped worse than the dude in the "Crying Game". At least in the movie the dude actually experienced talking to a real person. This is a crying Shame!
I'm sure some posters have suggestions for that now.
Thats what I'm reading into this cover up.
If he got "duped". Where are the phone records?
Looks like he has some family members (cousins?) stepping up to protect him by alleging a close friend was the one who orchestrated the hoax. Predictably, I'm hearing ESPN Radio hacks rushing to dismiss any more examination of the story.
It still doesn't pass the smell test in my opinion...at the very best, Teo exaggerated the importance of girlfriend to Bunyon-like proportions in repeated interviews. He still has to be held accountable for creating a myth.
I'm with Wallace, I think he adopted the girlfriend story to protect his private life. He had to be covering up a lie so 'awful' to the outside world, it was worth lying over and over again.
Questions for some of the younger people.
Te'o claimed they had their first date in October of 2010.
Do people in your generation call texting or telephone calls a date? Note that the statement first date implies or leads one to infer there were other dates.
Is it reasonable for someone that is 22 to maintain a relationship for 3 years including almost a year where you are "dating" and not skype? I thought Skype is free.
Texting and telephone calls eat into your cell phone plan. I would assume you younger people are quite adept at not going over your plan and know way better than people my age how to utilize technology to save money. Is that a reasonable assumption?
I just don't believe this guy that he is a victim. At best he was a victim but intentionally ate up the postiive press and allowed everyone to make a bunch of assumptions and write stories that were not remotely accurate.
