I was absolutely taking a shot. Not necessarily at IRLOU, but to all the posters that label themselves as being "realists", which insinuates that anyone who chooses not to FOCUS on the negative is somehow living in la la land. Using the term "realist" as a means to describe an opposite viewpoint is an insult. Most normal people have a little pumper and a little doom and gloom going on simultaneously depending on what is happening within the program at the time. There are about 5 to 6 posters here that I see as being unreasonable in their expectation. Just because you can point out every little thing wrong with the program doesn't mean you have some extraordinary grip on reality. If you want to use the term "realist" you deserve to be called out, IMO.
Agree completely with this. Well stated.
I think for James to say, "the main question is does OU have the drive to be great again", speaks volumes.
Very well put.
Sure you've got posters who take OU football way to seriously but there are a handful of guys who seem obsessed with those guys and throw a fit about their negativity on virtually every thread.
It's a kid's game. It's entertainment. So why get all worked up because somebody else doesn't see that?
I am very concerned with the depth of our dline and lack of size and depth at lb.... i never gripe that OU isnt getting a 5 star... stars mean nothing to me.... its all the whiffs... all the strikeouts that concern me...
Why? i undrstand the recruiting game.. I know distance, parents, friends going to other schools, ect has a lot to do with a kids decision... but looking at Oklahomas needs.. to me it mind boggling that we struck out on so many players at the positions we need...
We need depth bad... and for anyone to suggest that a 185 lb kid is the answer to lb is incredibally odd to me.... isnt that our problem now ? not enough size ? so y recruit kids that are still undersized?
First off great OP comments and perspective. It is unfortunate that use of a couple words have clouded what you were trying to express.
Hate to give them props but you only need to go back a few years within the BCS era and look what USC did.
Really quite impressive run that may still be going on if not for the NCAA getting involved with their lack of integrity.
But just like Florida State and what they did staying at the top for and extended period of time runs like this are the exception and not the rule. Heck look at Alabma as recently as 2007 they ended the year unranked. My thesis is that the really good programs fall into and out of elite status over time. It is a dynamic process. Going back to Alabma again they finished unranked in 5 of 6 years before 2008 but for the past 5 years their ranking has been 6, 1, 11, 1, and 1. They are an elite program at this point and time.
OU went through a great run from 2000-2004 with final rankings of 1, 11, 5, 3, and 3. However over the past 8 years we were in the top 10 3 times and 29, 6, 15, and 15 in the last 4 years. These facts plus the many issues on the D-side of the ball make me to conclude that at this time in our history I would not put our program in the elite category and I am very concerned that we will not be able to get out of our present predicament any time soon. Call me negative, call me gloom and doom, the OP might be calling me a realist I don't care. I am concerned though and feel it is my right to express my opinion on the board without being slammed or down voted simply because I don't fit some ones way of thinking.
I think some have taken me saying we are not an elite program now as being negative or anti-OU. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hopefully the explanation above will help some understand my thought process.
Even with the way things appear my hope always springs eternal and I get pumped again every year with a new team and further pumped during per-game of the first game when the OU program historical video is played on the big screen. Many of your will know the end goes: "There's only one...only one...only one...ONLY 1 OKLAHOMA

I have no problem with any of what you stated Only1.
I try not to get aggravated by stuff on here but when I do it's usually because someone is trashing players or committs, using over the top inflammatory statements about whatever (we suck, fat, lazy, stupid, blah, blah), or trying to minimize or ignore the accomplishments of the program or the people in it.
Stating we need big improvement on the defense or saying we need to find a few "difference makers" doesn't bother me a bit.
But that's totally different than saying a certain player is terrible or our current class is not any good or Stoops is lazy or overpaid or whatever.
Just my opinion.
OU was 11 points away from a 7-6 record.
4 point from 8-5
18 from 6-6
Point taken, but Notre Dame was 29 points away from a NC and I never felt they had a chance.

Hey Powervault - who won the election --Buddy ?? who is back in the Whitehouse- --again
A winner following a loser. IRLOU is very predictable. When a "loser" of his hits the board and the red down votes climb, you can bet that a well thought out troll for green up votes will soon follow.

Give it a rest IreallyHateOU, your schtick is so tiring. Quit trying to make it out that you are the almighty know it all of everything that is wrong with OU. It is your negativity and drama that makes me dislike this board. So at this time you are on IGNORE FOREVER! Enjoy your bitterness. Oh, and I hope your amazing knowledge, inept junior high coaching experience, and your intramural flag football college experience can convince the OU coaching staff that they should listen to you... I will see that When Hell Freezes Over!
its posts like these that gives ou fans a bad name... i dont think i know it all... i could be wrong 100% but I have an opinion.... thats all.. no need to spit out hate.. im glad im being ignored by some.. the less names ill be called!! my negativity drama? lol my concerns? my bitterness? lol!! good grief! add some substance, disagree with me, explain to me what makes my opinion so wrong but insult after insult wow
Dang, did you get cut from your junior high football team? Was IRLOU the coach?
Cause you sound, oh I don't know, a little bitter.
I'm sure IRLOU is not losing any sleep that you put him on, as you would say, IGNORE FOREVER!
If this wasn't an obvious case of some old junior high bitterness, this would actually be funny.
Correction: Vader has has trashed IRLOU with insults multiple, multiple, times. This is no longer funny, now it's just sad.

I'm a real adult fan, not like all you other spoiled babies. You don't know anything about me, but I can make wild accusations about you.
Yeah IRLOU is the negative one. LOL
I look at OU the last four years and see a program that is not what it used to be. We finished the 2009 season unranked & yes I realize that was the year Sam tore his knee up. The next year we came on strong and finished 6th in the nation. However in 2011 & 2012 we have finished the year ranked 16th & 15th. That is not, IMHO, good enough for Oklahoma football. I am not going to call out any players and I won't call out any coaches but one and that is Bob. The buck stops with him & so does the responsibility to get everything working like it should. Let me say before someone starts trying to put words in my mouth I am NOT saying Bob should be fired & I do think he has what it takes to get us back to where we used to be under him but when over the last four years you have an average rank of 12th it's time for him to start.

upvote!! plus the buck has to stop with Bob because He is the man in charge.. i actually think that his words say it all.. hes happy with a top 15 finish and a share of a conference championship... to me, mediocracy has defin entered the building! i guess I can be happy with a top 15 finish rather than losing to osu and w va, and finishing outside the top 25... maybe its a good thing to at least have something positive to build on... of course losing like they did in the second half should put sone fire in the players minds and work hard... OU to me is just not like it used to be..i do not know if they are recruiting the kids that really want it bad enough.... for the bama kids, they want that championship ring, they know what it takes to get it, and they know the sacrifce needed... the Sooners seem to go about if in a more professional business type of atmosphere.. do this.. do that... take care of this... and we'll win... sorry but if the players arent hungry enough, they will not put out the effort needed...
I'm no longer referring to myself as a sunshine pumper...I'm going with perspectivist.
Praise the Lord.
Look, 15th is not a great finish and I don't see anyone claiming it is. You guys keep taking Bobs comments out of context when you try to claim he is somehow totally happy or satisfied with that result.
There is a gap between "great" and "mediocre". Most people don't consider finishing in the top 10% of programs as "mediocre". Especially since its been a whopping two seasons since a BCS win and a finish at #6.
But keep your definition of "mediocre" if you choose - but that also means you have to accept that Bud and Barry had some "mediocre" periods as well. So has EVERY FREAKING COACH that has been in the profession for any length of time.
And with you stating "OU is just not what it used to be"....
Used to be when? A whole 4 years ago when we played for the NC? The ancient history of 2 years ago? Or under Bud or Barry - but whoops they had down periods of their own. Or maybe not what they used to be under Gibbs, Schnelly, and Boo Blake?
Just my opinion, but it seems to me that some of you REALLY need some perspective.
