I remember when he left there were people wanting him to be the next HC at OU. Others were saying that he wouldn't succeed at coaching and everyone wanting him at OU were "doom and gloomers". Haha
There's the ignorance!
He can build a career at A&M, a school that once fired him, as good as the one Bob has built here.
I live In Houston, and I've long known that Kevin Sumlin is an offensive genius, but what he did with the A&M defense in one year is extraordinary.
This may be the Cotton Bowl rout talking, but we could be the captive of a high performance plateau on which we can't improve without risking everything we've got. That's what Mack Brown faced and has not mastered yet.
Consider what Barry Switzer said early this season, that we just don't have the talent we've had in the best of times. In fact, I think Bob has never had the level of talent Barry enjoyed quite often. I think Bob has been a better coach in a more business-like time in collegiate football. Our strength and conditioning workouts and our unofficial off-season work and the higher academic monitoring of our athletes are all different from "the old Days."
Each new recruiting season gives us a chance to evaluate the ability of our coaches to actually develop the talent we do have. Look at the original recruiting ratings of the guys on our O and D Lines. The ratings may be false, but they're false the same way every year, so we ought to be able to make comparisons between schools or between years at the same school. This year's DL has three expected starters very highly rated out of high school: RJW, McFarland and McGee. Nelson was a highly ranked LB. Hurst and Colvin were not so acclaimed. On the OL Shead, Irwin, Woods and Thompson were higher rated than Ikard, Johnson, Evans or Williams. Obviously our coaches are developing SOME players against the odds even if they are failing to develop other blue chips.
It appears we're going to wait on career advancement or retirement to help us weed out coaches we might be better off without - no matter which those are.
I don't see anything in particular hurting our recruiting now that hasn't been the same for a decade or more. Gomer Jones might have been a kindlier fellow for the linemen to get along with than Schmitty, but not Port Robertson - and if you think so, Port would have called you a "peahead." He was the law in Bud's time.
We're still a small state dependent on a neighboring big state for players, but recruiters travel in airplanes these days. If we're going to maintain an advantage there we'll have to spend more time next door than they can and travel the blue highways with a talent hound.
Despite tonight's rout, I don't think of us as America's "designated losing team" for the more glamorous schools like USC and Notre Dame. Tonight we did become part of the 2012 Texas A&M Johnny Football story. Next year we won't be touted so much in the pre-season and maybe people will resent us less. We'll be worse at some positions and better at others and recruits will get to see again whether our coaches can develop new stars. We can't depend on Texas' morass to help us because we don't seem to be the #1 alternative to the Longhorns anymore.
I have always been a Sumlin fan. But, I have no idea why he would leave aTm to come here. I love OU. And I think that it is one of the great coaching gigs. But, although aTm has not been as good a coaching gig, I think Sumlin might make it into one. aTm has money . . . lots of money. They will spend money on a winner. The SEC provides some recruiting advantages. He also is close to Houston, East texas and Louisiana kids. I would not under-estimate Sumlin making aTm a great school for him to be at.
Agree with the last post. Sumlin is with a better team in a better state in a better conference. Why would he leave that?
Better go to plan B. Sumlin isn't going anywhere.
get Charlie Strong from Louisville
Lets see...A&M has a rabid fan base who thinks they are great, even when they aren't. OU has a large contingent of fans that actively promote how stupid they think the coaches are and how lazy the players are, even when they are winning 10+ games a year and are the winningest program of the modern era. HMMM, I am sure he would want to trade.
Oh, and the fact that the A&M trust has BILLIONS of $s doesn't hurt.
That is what I have posted elsewhere, let Bob stay for this year since Charlie has already made it clear he wants to stay at Louisville one more year. However, at the end of next season, we should load up the car with a bunch of money and drive over to his house with a tempting offer. He could make a better career for himself in the Big 12, rather than in the SEC
Some of you people are unbelievable! It's obvious you have no appreciation for the level of consistency Stoops has brought to OU. We were winninng 3 to 4 games a year before he came. His worst year has been a 7 win season. We've played 4 NC's in the past 12 years..won 6 of last 8 Big 12 CS's...and you want to get rid of him??!! I'm so glad some of you morons don't run the program. You'd be running coaches in and out of here every 2 or 3 years, when the team doesnt go undefeated and win a NC. Everything is cyclical. Our talent level has dipped recently, but it will pick back up. I'll bet my paycheck that when Stoops DOES decide to move on...the next coach won't take us to 4 NC games in his first 10 years. Any takers??
what are you talking about? the morons you are referring to on this thread couldn't run a lemonade stand much less a collegiate sports program.
How good would Sumlin's first year at ATM looked without a certain ut reject defensive back recruit?
Remember how good Mack looked with Vince?
It's all about the talent in CFB
And who, pray tell, is responsible for the current lack of talent at OU?
Whats unbeliveable is the state of Denial some of you are in...Its time for the powers to be that truly love this program to take a very hard look within themselves and the state of the program, if we dont you can forget recruiting in Texas for sometime...Many on this board warned of these days to come in previous years and all the sunshine pumpers just called them crazy and many left this board for that reason...I for one love Bob Stoops but we should have gone to the SEC too...and he was not for that, he seems content to win conference championships and rest on those laurels...well i for one am tired of seeing our D get shredded and watch our recruiting fall apart...Hard choices need to be made.....Espn laughs at us...i do think we look good on the offensive side but the D is bad and has been so for some time now....I dont think we had one player at the us army recruiting game and we used to have four or five players at a time...wake up folks

Has anyone else seen the 2013 Pre-season polls? We are ranked 21st, we are only 3 spots ahead of Northern Illinois, and they just lost their head coach. How does our coaches salary compare to those teams ranked ahead? Granted pre-season polls are not 100% accurate, but it does reflect the outside opinion of the program. What impact do you think this has on recruiting? Everybody needs to brace themselves for a few years of rebuilding, and that if things turn positive. In the meantime, I wouldn't expect a victory over ND next year. So that will make Big Game Bob 0-3 against the domers. I am thankful for what he did for the program and the turn around he performed (and has been well paid for), but the recent loses under the big lights are wearing. OSU is content with beating us, and now we are content with beating Texas. However, now Texas recruits will see aTm as a viable option to OU and Texas. Bob seems to be a good man and I hope he is turning out good young men. But he may be good to a fault as evident by his recent hires and lack of dismissals.

That comment was not meant to apologize for Stoops. The buck stops with him, or it should anyway. It was more to highlight how lucky Sumlin was in landing Manzel. I'm as pissed with Stoops as anyone.
Wathing the replay now. Just saw Stoops NOT go for the block on aTm's end of the 2nd Q punt. Pathetic. Going through the motions.
Sumlin hasn't done anything yet. No conference championship no national championship. Nothing. If you want to crown his a$$, go ahead and crown his a$$. Lol. He is selling hope to all these recruits. And next year when Manziel takes one pop and gets hurt they will be done. Mark it!
