Clay to Slot

  • This might be a good time for Brennan Clay to move to slot. Two weeks to make the transition.

Brennan has very good hands, and is a good blocker. If he can learn to run routes, and get separation, he could become a very good slot receiver. That won't happen in two weeks, but he has the skill sets to become a very, very good slot receiver in time. Why not make the move now, and get him a jump start on next spring at this position.

With Finch and Williams, and with Ross coming in next year, I think Clay could see more PT at the slot receiver position. I suspect this would be a better position for him at the next level ... should he progress far enough.

I know we are short at RB, but we have Finch, Williams and Millard. We also have Marshall Musil, who can operate out of a one back set as well.

  • Not a bad idea. He has really good hands, would be ideal for the slot for the rest of the season.

  • is clay ok to play?

  • So you think we should just roll with two running backs? One a true freshman?

We are deeper at WR than we were at RB to start the season.

I got it, Ronnell to slot!

  • On the surface Clay seems to be a viable option for the slot.

  • We have Finch and Williams (a freshman). We also have sets where Millard and Musil can be in a one back formation. Frankly, that gives us a better chance between the tackles, though not the home run.

I would probably not be suggesting moving Clay to slot if this were September, but we only have 3 regular season games ahead of us. With Baylor and Iowa St. I think Finch, Williams and Millard can handle the running game for us, adequately.

If someone goes down, Clay can always return. But I do not expect additional erosion to our backfield. I think Miller made a big mistake leaving in September. I think he would have been our back up to Whaley, and would be our starting running back now.

But Miller, Calhoun and Haywood all chose to leave the team in the middle of the season. We have to play with the players who are healthy, and want to play for us. We also have to look out for next season.

I do not think Clay will ever be a star running back for OU. But, I think he could very well be a great slot receiver down the line. The sooner we move him into that role, the quicker it will begin to pay dividends.

  • I see what all of you are saying, but why not put Roy in the slot. He said he likes to get the ball in space and it isn't like he is averaging 4 or 5 yards a carry. Then you could use Clay and the others as you all described. Just a thought.

Roy would be much better in the slot, he's a lot more shifty. Clay is a solid option, but he's a more north south guy. Guess we might see more of BW if either are the choice.
