Brodney Pool headed to Dallas Cowboys

  • Cowboys, Veteran Safety Agree To Terms
Posted by jellis at 3/15/2012 11:22 AM CDT on dallascowboys.com

Late Wednesday night, the Cowboys got a commitment from safety Brodney Pool, a seven-year veteran who spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets.

In 2009, Pool played for Rob Ryan, the current Cowboys defensive coordinator, in Cleveland. His secondary coach with the Browns, Jerome Henderson, now holds the same position in Dallas.

Pool, 27, was a second-round pick of the Browns out of Oklahoma in 2005, he has started 67 games in his career. For the Cowboys, he likely takes the spot of safety Abram Elam, a former Cleveland teammate.

Pool is the second defensive back the Cowboys have picked up in less than 24 hours, following Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr.

"A very athletic safety," head coach Jason Garrett said. "We have familiarity with him. He played in Rob's system, he played for Jerome Henderson in Cleveland, so we know him. He's a guy we spoke to last year during that abbreviated free agency period."

Listed at 6-2, 214 pounds, Pool has good size for a safety. He has 13 interceptions in his career, including four in his lone season under Rob Ryan.

"He's a guy who we think has very good ball skills and is very good on the back end," Garrett said, "but also can be a guy that can come down and do all the jobs that a safety in our defensive scheme has to do. His strengths are on the back end, using his athleticism, going and making plays on the ball downfield, so we feel like he can be a real asset for our team as well."

I hadn't noticed that terminology. You'd probably have to ask Jeff Ellis, the Dallas blogger....

My, what an articulate rebuttal. English major, right? So how did the longhorns suddenly enter this discussion, and what do they have to do with the Dallas Cowboys?

This will likely come as a shock to you, but there are tens of thousands of Oklahomans who are longtime and ardent Cowboys fans, justifiably proud of the string of OU players who have worn the blue star. Ralph Neely, Randy Hughes, Scott Case, Tony Casillas, and of course TRRW come to mind to name a few.

For the record, I was born and raised in Oklahoma and an OU alum who hates the Dirty Orange every bit as much as you. I have also followed the Cowboys since probably before you were conceived.

Your apparent hatred for all things south of the Red River smacks of unwarranted and baseless xenophobia and a gigantic geographic inferiority complex. Your inability to separate your loathing of ut from the rest of the state ignores the fact that more Texans dislike ut than love them. Ask any Aggie, Sand Aggie, Horned Frog, Bear, or Cougar.

It's OK to hate the Cowboys, but to do so merely because they happen to reside in the same state as ut is, well, see the preceding paragraph.

Sorry about the tv. I feel responsible somehow. Hope you get a great deal on a new one. Then you can watch Brodney and my beloved Cowboys suck in beautiful HD.

OK Rock, just for that you get my annual lame St. Patrick's Day joke:

Q: What's Irish and stays out all night?
    A: Paddy O'Furniture
