Still to be determined which bowl would host SEC & Big 12 champs (Sugar, Fiesta, Cotton, Orange?)

    kbohls ‏@kbohls
I'm told the meeting between the SEC and Big 12 champions would probably take place at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

    kbohls ‏@kbohls
I would think if such a game takes place, it should alternate between Jerry World and the Sugar Bowl, though.

@GaryParrishCBS Best I can tell, the SEC and Big 12 just agreed to play a game that'll never be played. Ever.

The Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences have announced a five-year agreement for their football champions to meet in a postseason bowl game following the 2014 season.

The champions of the two conferences will be in the matchup unless one or both are selected to play in the new four-team model to determine the national championship. Should that occur, another deserving team from the conference(s) would be selected for the game.

"A new January bowl tradition is born," said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. "This new game will provide a great matchup between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting postseason atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience."

"Our goal is to provide the fans across the country with a New Year's Day prime-time tradition," commented acting Big 12 Conference Commissioner Chuck Neinas. "This is a landmark agreement between two of the most successful football conferences during the BCS era to stage a postseason event. The creation of this game featuring the champions of the Big 12 and SEC will have tremendous resonance in college football."

"I am very excited by the prospects for a game between our champion and the champion of the Southeastern Conference," added incoming Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

During the 14-year history of the Bowl Championship Series, the Big 12 and SEC lead the nation with 11 seasons in which each conference has had at least one team ranked in the top four of the final BCS standings. Both conferences share the top spot all-time with 14 teams each that have finished in the top four of the final BCS standings. The two conferences have combined for 16 appearances in the BCS National Championship Game, with the Big 12 ranking second behind the SEC's nine appearances with seven trips to the National Championship Game.

The two league champions have met twice in BCS bowl games since 1998, both in BCS National Championship Games. In 2010, Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21, in Pasadena, Calif., and in 2009, Florida defeated Oklahoma, 24-14, in Miami, Fla.

Specific details, including host site(s), will be announced at a later date.

I think it's really exciting if it ever happens. The problem is that now with a 4 team playoff (almost certain at this point), the only way this game is played is if BOTH the SEC and Big XII conference champions are not ranked in the top 4. That has NEVER happened in the BCS era. So...don't get your hopes up just yet! :)

Have to go back to 2003 post season to find a yr when Big 12 or SEC weren't in final Top 2, much less Top 4 (hasn't in BCS era).

  • I think a big takeaway from this is not the game itself, but the fact that the SEC and Big XII are now aligned and partners much like the Pac 12 and Big 10 are. This separates the top 4 conferences from all others, leaving the ACC by the wayside. This should help keep the Big XII (and incidentally, OU) in a power position for the foreseeable future.

So basically, its what we get at the Cotton Bowl now? Right?

No. Right now the Cotton is Big XII Pick #2 vs SEC Pick # 4/5. So this bowl will be above the Cotton for the Big XII now, and will move above the Cap 1 bowl (which previously matched B1G #2 vs SEC #2).

Solid upgrade for the Big XII in terms of matchup with the SEC. Playing in Prime Time on New Years will make it an annual classic.

Agree, this is the point. Even though the new game will be the #'s 2 (or even #3) from each conference, this alliance elevates the SEC and Big XII even beyond where they were, and diminishes the ACC , Big East, etc., even more.

    Faultline

  • I love it, if OU doen't play for it all, then I want to play an SEC team. And I want to beat them!

    Mysterio1

  • Even though the champs not likely to meet the article said that the next team would be picked. Likely you'll have the champs of both leagues both in the final 4 playoff and have the number 2 teams playing each other in this game. No matter how it plays out great to have a top level matchup between the two best conferences.

    Sooner_Tdub

  • Wow someone is sensitive, thanks for the down vote. You need to read into my question alittle closer. I am thinking that the new discussion about Fsu, Clemson, and Miami looking at coming into the Big 12 may be what is pushing the SEC into teaming with us as they know we are coming into their backyard anyway. Regarding MIZZOU and A&M, yeah they wanted to go, but it takes two sides to agree.

  • When is the last national title game that didn't have a big 12 or SEC school in it?? 2002? I agree, this game will probably never happen lol

    SoonerSeif

  • I think this is great for the Big 12 and OU. It is also a good deal for the SEC. The Big 10 / PAC 12 Rose Bowl deal has dominated post season discussions and has always been the New Years Day event. Now we'll have one. Of course, it will not usually be the Champions of both leagues in the 4 team playoff senario but it will still be a big New Years Day game with a couple of top quality teams. Probably better than those in the Rose Bowl. Can't hurt recruiting either.

  • Ok Coach Stoops. The table has been set. We need to start beating these teams.

There is nothing more dangerous in this world than a man with nothing to lose.

  • A matchup of champs won't happen very often, but a matchup of each conference's #2 is plenty likely. Most years the top 4 will NOT have more than 1 team from each conference. There may occasionally be a 2nd team from the SEC or Big 12 in the 4 team playoff, but it won't be the majority of years.

So, most years, what you will have is the SEC champ and the Big 12 champ in the 4 team playoff, and the #2 team from each conference in a New Years Day Bowl.

For all of those who are pointing out that "this game will likely never happen" I say you are technically correct, but do not overlook that the REASON it won't happen is because the champs are in the 4 team playoff. Well, if both conference champs are in the 4 team playoff, then there's a pretty good chance that they'll play each other in the playoff (not always, but chances are good). In such instances, this game WILL happen, but instead of it being in the new bowl agreement, it will happen in the playoff instead.

This new deal could really result in a SEC champ v. Big 12 champ game being in the 4 team playoff and then a #2 v. #2 game on New Year's Day. That'd be awesome. Add the Cotton Bowl to that bowl lineup and any questions about which conference is better would be settled on the field a lot of years (not necessarily every year, but still fairly often).

  • Several good comments here, but did Jerry Jones just get a shot to trump the Cotton Bowl??

You can bet Jerry will be all over this deal and probably betting against the Sugar Bowl to have it at JerryWorld.

    Pressbox

  • Just said on espn that if the conference champs are in the final 4 then 2nd place team would play in the bowl game. I really like this set up for the Big 12. And the money won't be bad either, can you say Big Money.
