Brandon Williams

  • For those of us listening on the radio, how did Williams look? His stats were obviously good, but how did he look? Is he the real deal?

    CobraKai

  • Yes, he is for real--- looked good!

    OUhutch

  • Awesome. Hopefully he gets more PT. Would be nice to have a breakaway threat.

    CobraKai

  • He looked fast. Had some pretty good moves. Although seemed to get tripped up pretty easy on the ankles. But overall impressive for his first go and no fumble!

  • He looked like he has good speed and good moves. He didn't look very thick body-wise. He also looked like he had too much caffeine. Since he was in the game for the first time, he needed to settle down and let the game come to him. He and Blake Bell both looked like their hearts were racing at supersonic speed, and they needed to settle down. He is not ready to play a major role when the game is on the line until he can settle down some. He was fidgety even when he got up off of the ground after a carry. He didn't look like he knew what to do with himself. I believe he will settle down and will have a super career at OU. Some of the big time backs that played as freshmen like AD and Marcus Dupree acted like they belonged and used their skills while playing under control. Brandon is not there.

I'd have to agree. He was clearly dealing with nerves. His first opportunity to touch the ball was a pass to the flat where he was wide open and short-armed it for a drop. He was also pretty spin-move happy with his first few touches even at times when it didn't help him any, which I attribute to nerves and trying to do too much. Later on he settled down and jsut ran the ball, and was suddenly a lot more effective. He has a very high ceiling but is still rough around the edges, which is what you'd expect for a true freshman.

I don't disagree, but he is going to be special. Pure lightning waiting to happen. If Clay is out, will be interesting to see how much Williams plays next week. Would like to see him on kick returns, but I doubt if that happens.

  • Fyi. The game will reshow on foxsports on monday. Look for it. After reading your posts your criticism sucks to compare to all time greats. One game doesn't make his legacy. Keep in mind demarco didn't even play as a frosh. Even without turf toe he prolly redshirts. He shouldn't be criticized at all. I think he gets used during texas game. Remember ad and demarco both broke out during this game. Watch out for him.

  • He's got speed, moves and instinct. He lacks strength, but then he's just a baby. He's a true freshman for God's sake. He need to develop and he will, but damn he's got some talent. My lineup would be: Whaley, Finch, Williams and Clay- in that order.

  • Hook good thing ur not calling the lineup cuz clay is definitely 2 if not 1. He protects well. Enough said and he catches better then the rest. Def not 4th string and if williams is tiny then he us a tiny 205. Lol

Clay does not catch as well as Whaley. Whaley is better than Clay in every area, including pass pro.

BS, Clay has made more difficult catches than Whaley although they both have been excellent.

Clay is clearly the 2nd best overall back. Excellent power, pass catching and pass protector that does not fumble. Some of you guys get a woody every time a guy shows some quickness and throw every thing else out. What you are calling instincts looks more like a lack of patience and a lack of maturity to let holes open up, something Clay does a great job with. No doubt, Williams has potential but he has quite a bit to learn. His situation is like Finch last year, which BTW got passed by Clay.

At this point, I would play Whaley, Clay, Finch, Williams - in that order, which coincidentally is how Gundy sees it.

  • He's going to have us holding our breath. He is so quick. Great initial burst and has another gear. Yes he was nervous but he'll relax and maybe not use the spin move so much.

    That's who I am... a Sooner.

  • From the stands, it looked to me like he has some great instincts. I did not like the twirls. but he seems to have something a bit different. I would agree with those that said that it looked like he had some first-game nerves.

  • The only reason I would not put Williams in much vs Texas with the game in reach is pass protection, Texas has a solid front 7 and will throw some unique blitzes and such, and Williams may not be the best option to protect Landry in those situations, and if he was, you would have seen him before now.

  • Maybe we'll see Williams added to the KO return game--that's one area we need a spark in. Whaley was back their last night, but I didn't get any impressions yet of what kind of impact he'll make there.BSU didn't score enough to provide that opportunity. I think they only KO 3X and one was an on sides attempt.

He is the future and hopefully the NEAR future along with Dom....

  • Clay has had several carries these first 4 games and while YES he is very good catching passes out of the backfield he hasn't shown me anything rushing- particularly. Chris Brown had better field vision, but that 's who he reminds me of....Finch caught one for 40 yds last night- Whaley caught a few too.

I think what we do agree on is that Whaley should be the starter from here on out.

If you want to put your future on one of the most "injury prone" positions go ahead. If you want production from the KR team teach people how to block it and let another back run the ball back.

  • he was super fast runs like his shoe laces are tied together nerves. Not impressed since bsu was tired he still didn't break anything I hope he plays against ut. I think he could be a difference maker but doubt if we see him as I expect whaley to go off

Win today, or you'll be a loser tomorrow!

  • He's a good looking back but a little on the "skinny" side. Showed a burst and was obviously battling excitement and nerves. Not really enough of a sample to see what he can do against real competition. I wish the other 2 guys would have stayed and he could redshirt. Hopefully, he will improve each week and get more PT. Appears that he has the breakaway speed to be a gamebreaker.

I'm surprised that you would ask that question. I, too, was listening to the game on the radio, and Merv gushed about Williams' potential. He practically said that he was surprised that Williams had not been in games sooner.

Some of you criticized Williams' spin moves. I am surprised by that too. After watching the taped game twice, I am amazed by one of his spin moves. Somehow he maintained his balance and added an additional five yards. I don't think that even AD could make that move.

BTW, I do agree that Whaley is numer uno. He seems to do everything well.
