Big 12 Media Days: Bob Stoops

  • Wide open dropped passes killed us against TT. Bob should be upset. I like his comments about having a better running game this year.

  • Who the flip is Tre Walker. There better not be a Tre Walker.

He's a linebacker at Kansas State.

It is good to know that we had 10 guys playing bad at the end of the season offensively and one playing well. The qb gets too much blame and too much credit depending on the situation but it amazes me how Bob protects Landry. He must believe his psyche is weak IMO.

It's because he is mentally weak!

On this board you must agree with everyone or you're wrong.

I can't get it out of my head that Bob sounds similar to Mack Brown talking about Chris Simms. I don't want him to bash Landry or anybody else but now he is blaming the entire offense but Landry.

There is no comparison when it comes to Sims and Landry, Landry has the resume but not the ability to win them all on his lonesome. He made enough plays to have us undefeated going into Bedlam, just catch half of the balls that were dropped and do not fumble at the end of a couple long gainers and we do not have a lot of these discussions however if we go undefeated regular season he still gets knocked by some. The point is Landry is good enough and Stoops knows it.

  • I agree our receivers were terrible after last year after Ryan was injured. Of course we only have one back and one future star based on spring ball and a bunch of guys who have never seen a division 1 field. It is hard to imagine despite their talent the incoming guys are going to be superstars immediately.
Kenny Stills is being touted as a great receiver. He was poor last year!

  • To say that Blake Bell will be used just like last years tells alot. I thought people on the team competed for the starting job in practice. If your Blake Bell it has to deflate you to know your not even being considered to play as a starter regardless of how you play in practice.

Right, I'm sure that Bell is shocked and devastated to hear that Landry Jones will be the starting QB this year.

  • I don't know why Bob Stoops would use another institution to grade the particular units.

They have always done it. Mostly it is for tendencies. They grade that school and then give them their report as well. He has done it for years and years.

    What a load of bullshite...

Last year started with... We need a running game and we need our recievers to catch the ball... We do this and with Landry we can with the title. In the beginning, due in large part to Whaley's tough running behind a decent OLine we were successful running. Whaley goes down and the only running game we have was the Belldozer when Landry is not in the game. Before the A&M game, Ryan Broyles was a vacuum cleaner and the other recievers were getting good looks because of all the attention broyles got and they made catches. Broyles goes down and they have tighter coverage, they start dropping the ball. So basically at the end of the season we have NO running game with Landry on the field and the only two receivers who seemed to be catching the ball (Jaz and Ryan) are out.... The offense sucks... I dont care what QB you have if there is no running game and the recievers drop balls you will look bad.

    For instance:
Pre- Whaley and Broyles injuries (roughly first 8 games)

Landry passes for a 67% completion perc., near his career average.

Post-injuries Landry's comp perc drops to 56.6.. That is a 10% drop, that can be attributed almost completely to dropped passes. Now in the first eight games he averaged just short of 30 completions a game and 13.1 yards completion. So a 10% loss comes to 3 receptions for 36 yards (three first downs). This alone could make a huge difference.

BUT combine this with the running game as well. In that same 8 game period the running game averaged 5.29 yards per carry on 271 carries (34 carries per game avg). After losing Whaley, the ypc went down by .7 ypc. Figure 40 carries per game avg in the last 4 games and thats an average of 28 yards less in the running game each game.

So statistically we lost over 60 yards a game combined due to these two issues.. And this doesnt even address the defensive breakdowns for big plays.

Any coach will tell you, if you lose 60 yards per game from your average for any reason, it is HUGE.

To lay all of the blame on the QB for the complete breakdown this team had at the end of last year shows an incredible lack of knowledge of the game. Which is not surprising since this "Landry's the problem" mantra flies directly in the face of what the person who understands the game and these players better than any of us (Bob Stoops) is saying on the subject.

  • Hey faultline,
Do you think Blake bell is fired up to ride the bench the majority of the time. This is his third season. He didn't come to ou to be a cheerleader for laundry jones. If you put a truth serum in blake bell I'm sure he would reveal how much it sucks to be passed over for stoops golden boy. Wake up and smell the coffee.

    tatertot

  • Your using logic to combat a troll.

No one is happy to be on the bench, but its hardly a surprise to anyone that LJ is our starter.

  • Bell may not be happy to be the back up, but he will get alot of snaps, damn near a hundred even if does NO mop up..given how often they used him last year, and as past years have shown, he is still just one snap away from starting this season, not to mention being the leading candidate for Starter over the next two years. He is a smart young man who knows he is in a VERY good spot.

Boy I hope Bell gets a hundred carries because I get a coaches Texas tickets in 2013 in a bet.

Blake is well aware of his role and is a lot less stressed than you. It is called teammate. Landry he looks up to and recognizes Landry is the leader of the offense. I can promise you this is the case. I was told Millard will get more carries than Bell for the year.

It's not insider information the coache(s) says that Millard will get more carries. We've heard it for since the middle of the season last year. Peace, if you sat he gets more than Bell, thats not saying much.

You are right that the coaches have said that about Millard previously. I think that it is more of a mandate this year.

  • I don't get the "logic" behind the notion that Landry hasn't won the position over Bell and Allen. No coach in his right mind, especially at this level, isn't going to play his best QB. If he doesn't, he starts losing and gets canned.

    NMSooner80

  • BYLRK.....your right on the money. The Landry Jones apologists are maddening. I am not going to dring LJ coolaid until I see something worth drinking to this year. Ihave watched football for over forty years and can spot good caliber play fairly easily. LJ has performed well in about half his games. This isnt rocket science.
