Best bars in Norman

  • Heading to the game this weekend and have never been to Norman in my life. Anyone have any recommendations for a cool bar to check out Friday afternoon/night?

  • Basically can't go wrong anywhere on Campus Corner.

    Louie's (Bob Stoops' bar)
    O'Connell's (OU legend)
    Logan's (chainish sports bar)
747 (trendy... but good for judging talent)
Brother's (another legend that may not be as popular these days)
Joe's Taverna (my personal fave, basically a hole in the wall)

Sugars? hehe j/k but you might end up there for a bit. I'd check out Logan's, O'Connells or 747. They are all on campus corner on Boyd and Asp. d

Are you staying Saturday night? Louies Bar and Grill on the westside will have many of the coaches there watching the Bama/LSU game. If you are in Bricktown Friday afternoon is pretty good there. 747 is by far the most hip hop bar and as far as frats and OU players they all go there. The talent is by leaps and bounds the best. Older crowd is Louies.

  • Walk a few blocks east and have a drink at The Mont on their patio. Then go west past campus corner to The Library. You can drive to these places if you can't do the 3 block walk. Then finish the evening walking around CC and trying the above mentioned.

The Mont is a lot farther than 3 blocks from the stadium and so is the Library. Way way too much walking. None of those places are really good on gameday with limited TV's. Their patios are awesome but the weather is suppose to be 30% chance of rain. Plenty of good places on Campus Corner and with finally an afternoon game it might keep going awhile.

  • All I remember is Louies, The Mont, Town Tavern, and the all time favorite Sheriff's.

  • I know this is somewhat off topic response....but the bar scence in Norman is no where close to the past....... Jockey Strap, Winchesters, Zansibar, Blue Onion, South Forty, Dallas/Sooner opera house, Boardwalk/brothers, Liberty Ds, Grey Fox, plus Legends, Mont, Filling Station, Opies, O'Connells are a few that have been there for ever. That was from late 70s. I'm sure I'm missing several.

Drinking age was 18 and bars were a gold mine. Playboy had OU as top party campus in the nation in mid 70s if I remember right.

  • You remember correctly :)

  • The bar at The Sooner Legends Inn and Suites is great.

I'm not talking from the stadium. Last I checked most people hang out at CC on game days not the stadium. Also these places are better the night before the game. However, the library is less then 3 blocks from CC and the mont is about 5. If you really need to go to a bar on CC on game day I'd say louies. Oconnels is way over rated and borderline trashy.

  • Thanks for the info guys... I'm sure I'll find something that works. Sounds like Campus Corner is where I should be.

Campus Corner is your best bet. Plenty of choices all right there within a couple blocks. You can also mill around the streets and buy beer from the beer tub girls and watch some of the TV's set up outside, and listen to some of the local radio people if your into that. My personal favorite is Logan's.

  • Besides bars, you won't go wrong eating Mexican at Taramuhara's. I strongly believe it's the best Mexican in the state. It's a little southeast of the stadium about a mile or so. Can't remember the street.

  • Fontanella's was my fave bar in the seventies. Ahhh listening to Redneck Mother with a Lone Star. Doesn't get any better!

  • Since you have never been to Norman, I would stay at Sooner Legends, or at least stop by, have a few drinks & check the place out. Walk down all the halls of the hotel as well as the lobby. Every room we have ever stayed in has great pics of Sooner Legends. I have stayed in the Boz room, Stacey Dales room etc... we love it there. Since the game is Saturday afternoon, you may be required to stay 2 nites. However, it may already be booked up, I would call asap. I think it is a must see for all SOONER FANS! Don't miss seeing the longhorns hanging above the door leading into the lobby!
No I am not the owner, LOL! Just a very happy customer from the DFW area.
We always have at least a couple of drinks at Louie's, that on occasions, has turned into many more than just a few! The New York Style Pizza place at CC is good stuff! If the pizza line is real long, & it will be right after the game, go up to the bar & order a couple of drinks, & then go get back in line. Makes the wait much better.
Hope you enjoy your 1st trip to Norman OKLAHOMA on game day at least 1/2 as much as I did mine, back in the day!

Oh man, you are from a bit closer to my vintage when you mention Sheriff's. As one who paid his way through OU with a cue stick, Sheriff's was on the rounds.

  • If you go to CC friday night, be sure & go back down there on game day. You will have to see it to believe it! You will think you have died & gone to SOONER HEAVEN!! SOONER NATION every where you turn!
The stores at CC are also GREAT to shop in for all of those must have SOONER GEAR items. Some stores close early, so you may want to shop friday afternoon. Game day crowds are an adventure!
Report back next week & let us know how it went. More details the better.

It has been a long time since I have been back to Norman but I believe it was on Porter street close to Vann's which is good BBQ IMO. The Mexican place is very good as well.

Yeah Porter that's it. A little south of Van's.

I have googled Louie's and come up with two different addresses....301 W Boyd and 3750 W Robinson. Which should my son and I go to?

Depends on what you're in the mood for.

On gameday the one on Boyd/asp will be fun because it's in campus corner and there's so much going on. If you want to avoid that scene go to the one on Robinson. If it's not gameday, go to Robinson.
