Best OU team not to win a national championship *

My top 5 would be
1978 Billy Sims' Junior year derailed in Lincoln
2003 Were being compared to all time great teams J white getting hurt vs K state no way Lsu beats us with a healthy white
1988 In the Orange Bowl Miami's home field too much to over come
2008 Should have beaten texas and then had to play florida in Miami OU seems to get a tough draw in Miami alot
1971 The Express WOW the no call on the fumble in Norman Nebraska again

I would have to say the 1978(loss to Nebraska), 1987(loss to Miami in the 88 Orange Bowl), & 2003(kst &lsu losses) stand out to me.

That 2003 team should have wiped KSU and LSU off the map.

Not even close: 1954!!!
Undefeated!!
I believe tOSU was NC because the Big 10 had far a larger population and many more sports writers (who were the voters pre-BCS).
OU won NC in 1955 and 56 - so it could have been 3 years in a row!.

It almost had to be 54. It had nothing to do with the performance on the field. Only the perception of the Sports Writers.

Switzers first team 1973 7-7 tie with then number one USC both wire services snubbed us and would not put us on the ballots. would of been the first threepeat in college football history!!

I agree with you Jimbo. The "73" Sooners were definitely the best team in my opinion. They were good enough to have been National Champions and that would've made three in a row.

I will also throw in a plug for the 2006 Sooners who were 2 blown officials calls from being undefeated. #1 the Oregon onside kick and #2 the texas lateral call. However, the 78 Sooners were the best team in the country that year no question in my mind.

I vote for 1978 with the Sims fumble at the Nebraska 3. That team had Billy Sims, Greg Roberts, David Overstreet, Reggie Kinlaw, Kenny King, it was unbelievable.
One that is forgotten is the 1949 team that was undefeated won the Suger Bowl over LSU 35-0 and had all of the World War II vets on it. They were all about 28-30 years old. They gave the title to Notre Dame.

lsu was more talented. dominated the los the whole game and smothered ou's wr's. ou was lucky to have a chance at the end.
i would say 78' followed by 08'.
71' was before my time.

1. 1978 - still hurts because I was a student at the time.
2. 1971 - amazing team that came SO close.
3. 1973 - best team in the country by mid-October and stayed that way.
4. 1954 - that was before I was born, but I haven't figure out yet how they never got to No. 1 despite being 10-0.
5. 2008 - couldn't overcome "home-cooking" and poor red zone offense.

didn't ou fumble about 8 times in the loss to nu in 78' and go on to avenge the loss? i might be mixing up seasons. it's been awhile.

Everyone of you are wrong, just flat out wrong.
The best OU team to lose an NC was the 1988 loss to KU in the final game of March Madness.
KU was good, but OU was the better team. For whatever the reason Tubbs and his team just didn't finish as they should have. That is one that never should have gotten away.
You all missed this one as you are just football junkies
