5 biggest losers in the NFL draft *

  • from an article on CBS Sports and I agree with #1 100%

    FIVE BIGGEST LOSERS

    1. Rams QB Sam Bradford -- No Blackmon. No Floyd. No Kendall Wright. No A.J. Jenkins. No mas.

    2. Former 'Skins QB John Beck -- A year ago at this time he was groomed as the team's starter. Now, he's gone. And he should be. The Redskins don't just have one new quarterback. They have two, thanks to that fourth-round selection of Cousins as RG3's clipboard holder. Somebody had to go, and that somebody was Beck.

    3. Cleveland QB Colt McCoy -- He said he wants to stay and compete for the starter's job, but one word of advice, Colt: Don't. You have no shot. When the Browns spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback who turns 29 this season it's not to develop him. Brandon Weeden IS the starter, period.

    4. Dallas cornerback Mike Jenkins -- Dallas owner Jerry Jones says he thinks "the world of Mike Jenkins," but he doesn't think enough of him to keep him around long. With the addition of Claiborne, Jenkins' future as a Cowboy is on life support -- one reason there's talk about trading him.

    5. Miami quarterback Matt Moore -- He's the Dolphins' starter ... for now, but get ready to move over, Matt. The Dolphins aren't going to wait long on Tannehill after making him the eighth pick of the draft. So he had 19 starts at Texas A&M. Mark Sanchez had 16 at USC and stepped in immediately. Same goes for Cam Newton after he had 14 starts at Auburn. The clock is ticking, Matt.

  • Mike Jenkins

So i guess you are assuming that Claiborne and carr are automatically better than Jenkins and they dont need more than 2 corners? I disagree and think he will start opposite carr but i hope you are right trade him to houston please

  • Sam got no help in the draft, which is sad because they have NOTHING!

    oumodguy

  • The Rams had all those picks and didn't help their team with any of them pathetic I was worried when Sam was chosen by them that they were a poor franchise and they have done nothing since they chose him to help him and now I am worried about his health and career

  • Completely flabbergasted by the Ram's draft. The entire front office of that organization needs to be kicked in the head by a mule.

    83000strong

  • It would have been great for Sam to get Blackmon, Floyd and/or Ryan but lets see which free agents will be avail,,, cause there will be a lot of 'em.

    That's who I am... a Sooner.

  • I agree. Fisher is a D emphasis coach and the first pick was not bad- the DT out of LSU. But the two WRs- were from Appalachia State and some other podunk school. The ONLY OG they took was late round and they wasted a pick on a KICKER? I hope Sam has a REALLY stout insurance policy!

Hook, you know better than that. You don't have to be major D1 to be a player. Some other wr's from small schools

    Jerry Rice...Miss. Valley St.
    Terrell Owens....Tenn. Chattanooga
    Andre Reed....Kuntztown University
    Brandon Marshall....Central Florida
    Randy Moss....Marshall
    Miles Austin....Monmouth University

At least give the guys a chance on the field first.

  • Strike Randy Moss off your list. He only went to Marhsall since Florida State kicked him out for weed. Before that I believe he was suppose to be at Notre Dame also, and Marshall was the only one that took him since his talent was already known

Main point is that they could have had Ruben Randle an lsu player that Oklahoma actually recruited to play with Sam. Those other guys would not have even seen the field here at OU.

So there really was no investment on their qb with their offensive picks except for the rb.

Have you seen Quick's tape?. If he had qualified for an NCAA Div 1 school, he'd have played anywhere. Just because he isn't a name player doesn't mean he's not talented. Jerry Rice wasn't even taken in the draft and turned out to be the best WR the NFL has ever seen. The number 1 and 2 receivers taken that year turned out to be one year wonders and quickly forgotten. Givens is a Kendall Wright clone. The Rams improved their interior OL in free agency and probably will add one of the remaining free agent linemen or make a trade for one by the time the season starts. Fischer knows how to build a team and he knows he has to give Sam the weapons and the protection he needs in order to take the Rams to the next level. I respectfully disagree with the CBS Sports analysis.

Jerry Rice was drafted in the 1st round with the 16th pick of 1985 so at least get your facts straight. So if you get that fact wrong the rest of your argument falls apart don't you think??

  • Here are the comments by and takes of NFL.com's draft evaluators on the two WR's taken by the Rams. If you read them you'll get a totally different picture from what has been indicated by the CBS Sports Analyst and several posters..

Here is Mike Mayock's pre-draft evaluation of Brian Quick!

    OVERVIEW
Quick has very uncommon size for the position and surprises scouts with his ability to run. The fact that he is a former basketball player and high jumper shows in his play. Despite his short time playing football, he understands how to run routes and get open. Look for Quick to be the highest pick from Appalachian State in years and be taken in the second round.
    ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Quick's size is his greatest asset. His time playing football has been limited, and professional coaching could help mold Quick into a game changer at the next level. He is a reliable hands catcher who has the radius and grip strength to bring down any ball thrown near his area. He is a great option in the short game, as he understands how to use his frame to shield out smaller defenders.

WEAKNESSES Inexperience is his Achilles heel. He hasn't shown the ability to run by big-time corners at his level. He sometimes has trouble adjusting to poorly thrown balls. (Sam doesn't throw many of those) Being tested early in camp will give the greatest indication of Quick's ability to handle the jump in talent.

    Post-draft:
Mayock's take: "The Greatest Show on Turf personally welcomes Brian Quick. He's a height, weight, speed specimen. His production could be a little delayed, but he will be fast-tracked by the Rams' coaching staff. ... This is a guy they're going to need production from right away."

The Rams think they may be getting a T.O. clone without the attitude and locker room issues.

Here is Bucky Brooks' take on Givens

    OVERVIEW
Givens is an early entry junior out of Wake Forest, where he was a first-team All-ACC selection this past year. He has adequate size and is a blazing straight-line runner who looks similar to Philadelphia's Jeremy Maclin with his movements in-route. He relies heavily on his speed in everything he does. He's capable of taking a speed-out and cutting upfield to daylight. He is a polished player who could be selected late in the first round; he has all the traits of a productive NFL receiver and an immediate No. 2 option.
    ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Givens is an elite deep-threat receiver who is fluid and quick off the ball. He can eat up a defensive back's cushion in a few steps to get them on their heels and then accelerate in a very controlled, explosive motion. He adjusts well to balls in front or behind him, and he can make all the necessary catches at full speed. Givens has obvious field awareness and routinely would get behind corners in Cover 2 before throttling down for a quick back-shoulder throw before a safety can get there. He can get jammed at the line on occasion but usually beats defenders with a jab step. He has excellent footwork at full speed to change directions or drag his feet along the sideline.
WEAKNESSES Givens can get jammed at the line of scrimmage when he doesn't ignite a quick jab step or if an explosive corner quickly gets in his face. He often looks over his shoulder and gets alligator arms going across the middle. He is a tough player but far from physical. Givens gives little effort as a blocker in the run game and is only capable of being a decoy or running off his man.

    Post Draft

Bucky Brooks' take: Givens gives the Rams a productive pass catcher with speed and quickness. Sam Bradford now has a legitimate vertical threat to target on deep throws.

  • I don't see the criticism of the Ram's draft. Blackmon and Floyd were gone and they went for the next best guy on their board. I believe that anybody that thinks the Rams needed another 5'10" WR is mistaken. Besides, Kendall Wright is one of the most questionable draft choices in the first round.

I believe they picked up a big, athletic WR with significant upside, a RB with great hands and serious athleticism and a second WR with good speed.

BTW, I didn't see a sure thing Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald in this draft. I do not put Blackmon in that category. He is more R. Wood.

    NorthCalSooner

  • They took Quick before Rueben Randle was drafted. ALSO, yes, Crimson Mark I do agree- small College guys can make it HOWEVER, just because a guy looks like a stud and runs well at a "combine" doesn't mean he's a player. The guy has never even played against DECENT competition. Hell, Coffeyville JUCO might beat Appalachia State.

They have GOT to get some reinforcments on the O Line, or its a moot point!

  • Blackmon will have a mediocre career and Floyd will be a bust mark it.

    Kyote80

  • Just a few other solid NFL wideouts from small schools.

    Victor Cruz - UMASS
    Brandon Stokely - La Lafayette
    J. Edelman- Kent State
    Ant. Gates- Kent State
    Josh Cribbs- Kent State
    Antonio Brown- Central Michigan
    Johnny Knox- Abilene Christian
    Nate Burleson- Nevada- Reno
    Donald Driver- Alcorn State
    Greg Jennings- Western Michigan
    Vincent Jackson- Northern Colorado
    Jacoby Jones- Lane College
    Laurent Robinson- Illinois State

These arent Superstars as have been mentioned in earlier posts, but they are very capable NFL Starters

    Just an observation.

I think Jenkins is out because Dallas also resigned Orlando Scandrick to be their nickel back. They gave him decent money. I think Jenkins is odd man out not because he isn't good enough to compete, but because they have other needs on the team (over a 4th CB) and Jenkins has some trade value. Certainly they can get more for Jenkins than Scandrick.
