30 for 30 The best that never was

  • Started watching this on ESPN....too sad for me to watch...turned it off.

OU on Teddy Bears hanging over my grandson's cradle. Future star QB.

  • Yes it is sad, even with his NFL comeback. He got cut without the chance to make another roster? This after leading the Rams in rushing.
Anybody know how he doing with his recent health issues?

    Mysterio1

  • Yeah it was definitely one of the most wasted careers that could have been in history- Joe Don Looney was before my time, but wasn't his wasted too?

  • Joe Dan was on the Lion's roster in pre-season. I think some other teams gave him a look.
If you've ever read Paper Lion (is that right?) by George Plimpton there's a great (and sad) story about a confrontation between Joe Schmidt and Joe Don.
Joe Don had missed a few practices and Joe Schmidt goes to Joe Don's room. He said Joe Don was sitting in the middle of his bed wrapped in an Indian blanket. Joe S. said I've been playing for the Lions for 12 years (I don't remember the exact numbers) and the only practice I missed was when I had a concussion the day before.
Joe Don looked up at him and said: "Damn Joe, you need to take a break."

  • I've seen it and have the DVD. Worth watching just for the highlights if nothing else. I can remember the 1983 Texas game-Marcus' last game as a Sooner. He just seemed totally disinterested. (of course I didn't know he had suffered a concussion at the time). I told a friend of mine who went to the game with me that I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up quitting. Unfortunately, that's what happened. He was fun to watch though.

  • Another:
The Heisman winning Tailback from USC (can't remember his name) was on Johnny Carson's show and Carson asked him if he'd ever been scared on a FB field. He said: "Yeah when I was a sophomore we were playing OU and Oklahoma had a RB named Joe Don Looney. Tackleing Joe Don was like running full speed into a brick wall! I looked at my buddy who was a senior and said, "You go tackle him. I still have 3 years to play!"

  • I cannot help but feel sorry for Marcus and yes it is sad! For the time he was here I loved watching him play, he got some real bad advise from a parasite.

  • When I originally watched this, I got the impression that Switzer and the staff did not know how to handle someone with Dupree's talent. Switzer said on the 1st day of practice MD was the best player on the field, problem was the he didn't have to work at being the best. That is how much talent he had.

In his short time at OU, he was and still is the most exciting RB to ever play.

IMO, if he would have stayed at OU and stayed healthy he could have been best running back to ever play at OU and the NFL.

  • Dupree is a terriffic guy, and blames no one but himself. He listened to the wrong people, but says no one forced him to listen to those people. He will be the first to say that leaving OU was the biggest mistake of his life. Still he does not dwell on what might have been. A very impressive person to just sit and visit with.

  • I can't watch the whole thing. About 25 minutes in I'm looking for something happy to switch over to.

That was probably Mike Garrett. That was also back when they still had the one-platoon rules, but I think those went out after the 1964 season.
