3 Sooners up for College Football HOF! *

  • It's an absolute joke that Shoate & Bosworth aren't already inducted.

Three on 2013 College Football HOF Ballot

Bosworth, Hughes and Shoate Among 77 Players Listed.

NORMAN, Okla. - The National Football Foundation announced Tuesday that University of Oklahoma alums Brian Bosworth, Randy Hughes and Rod Shoate are among the 77 players listed on the 2013 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. The announcement of the Class of 2013 will be made on May 7 and inductions will take place at the 56th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10.

To be eligible for the ballot, players must have been named a First Team All-American by a major/national selector as recognized and utilized by the NCAA for their consensus All-America teams; played their last year of intercollegiate football at least 10 years prior; played within the last 50 years and cannot be currently playing professional football.

Bosworth was a two-time consensus First Team All-America selection as a linebacker for the Sooners in 1985 and 1986, claiming the Butkus Award each of those seasons. He helped lead Oklahoma to three straight Orange Bowl appearances and the 1985 national championship. He was also tabbed as a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1986. He led Oklahoma in tackles for three straight seasons from 1984-86.

Hughes served as a defensive back on Oklahoma's 1974 national championship team and was part of squads that claimed three Big Eight titles. An All-America selection in 1974, Hughes was also named a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete and a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American that season. He finished his career fourth in OU history with 14 interceptions.

Shoate was a three-time All-America pick as a linebacker for the Sooners from 1972-74. He earned consensus First Team All-America honors in 1973 and was a unanimous pick in 1974 when the Sooners claimed the national championship. A two-time Big Eight Defensive Player of Year, he finished seventh in the 1974 Heisman Trophy voting. Shoate concluded his career with 420 tackles, the third-highest total in school history.

  • Rod Shoate seriously needs to be inducted. It's been long overdue.

  • I think Shoate has been penalized for some personal issues he had while still alive. Boz is being punished for not being a media-darling back in the day.

Some of those votes have been a joke regarding OU people, in the past. Exhibit A: ex-UCLA coach Terry Donahue got into the College Football Hall of Fame before Barry Switzer did. Enough said!

  • This is a sham. The people who determine who get into the CFHOF are The Honors Court. They are a bunch of Good Old Boys, who think they should have to sole right to elect people to the CFHOF. We are talking about fewer than 20 guys making these decisions. The members of the National Football Foundation get to determine who gets on the ballot, but The Honors Court makes the determinatiion of who actually gets in.

These guys will never elect a Brian Bosworth, or a Rod Shoate. Too much personal baggage.

All 3 of these guys belong in the CFHOF, based upon what they did between the sidelines. I don't care is some guy later became Predisent of his Rotary club after he was finished with football. These are the same guys who kept Switzer out for years, because Darrell Royal was their buddy, and Darrell hated Switzer.
