1995 OU coaching staff.

  • Anyone remember who was on the staff at the time? I know Smellyburger was the head coach.

    Gary Nord-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
    Kurt Van Vanlenburgh-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
    Danny Hope-Offensive Line
    Clarence James-Receivers
    Merv Johnson-Tight Ends/Special Teams
    Ken Pope-Defensive Ends
    Craig Swabek-Running Backs
    Jon Tenuta-Secondary
    Christ Vagotis-Defensive Tackles
    Dick Foster-Department Recruiting Coordinator
    Ron Steiner-Assistant to the Head Coach
    Mel Mills-Graduate Assistant
    Brian Callahan-Graduate Assistant

    And that doesn't include the administrative staff, weight staff, training staff etc. That broken down alcoholic pretty well hired anyone he thought he needed. The one year reign of terror. Definitely a dark period in OU history. The saddest part is that he coached OU during their 100th year of football. I got this info from the media guide. It's about an inch and a half thick. Would almost like to erase the 100th year from the record books. But the next 3 years were worse. Definitely the abyss of the 90's.

  • Thanks Skip. I was having a debate with a friend about Tenuta being on staff at the time. He told me he had never coached at OU.

  • It would be interesting to know how many of those guys, if any, are still in coaching. Merv's around, of course, though not as a coach (but think any of the current staff wouldn't listen if he had a suggestion?).

    As awful as this staff was, it was still a bit better than anything John Blake put together..fake resumes and all.
