ankle injury...

  • Have any of you sprained the **** out of your ankle, thought it was healing? Then felt like you needed to go back to using an air splint? Is that normal?

  • back in my early 20's, I had a very bad ankle sprain - and tore 4 ligaments...

This was before air splints (early 70's)... all they gave me was a partial cast (plaster 'band' under my foot, and up my heel past my ankle - the whole thing kept together with ace bandages...)
The doctor told me to 'keep my weight off of it' and inspected the cast every few days to make sure I hadn't put any weight on it...

I lived on the fourth floor of the barracks and had to hop up and down stairs on one foot several times a day... censored

It was a long time before I trusted that foot, but once that blamed cast came off, I never even thought of putting it back on...

    I thought it never heal...

  • thanks for the encouragement or warning. i'm afraid i'm going to have a cankle for the rest of my life. grumble

  • No, you should be alright. The ankle I sprained is just as strong as the other, it really only took a couple months to get back to semi-normal...

  • Yep, tore mine up pretty bad right after Christmas. I, however, vowed it would not interfere with my trip to the Fiesta Bowl and ditched the crutches early. Although I kept the air cast on and used a cane, I did too much too soon and it still isn't right - Doc said it might never be. I've started wearing a compression brace/wrap if I know I'm going to be on my feet a lot.

I quit wearing my air split after 2 weeks because I felt like a wimp. But I'd wear it in high traffic cases ~ 4th of July at the park or where there were a lot of kids~ to protect it and as a reminder to others to be careful. Any bumping had me crying like a baby.

  • Takes three times as long to heal when you try it before it has healed. That simple. Get back off of it and let it heal.

  • I've always heard that a badly sprained ankle takes longer to heal than an actual broken ankle... good luck.
