Vacation

  • With spring break coming up and summer right around the corner, does anyone have any vacation plans?

    ss182

  • You're asking the wrong guy...

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do on vacation this year...

3 years ago I went to Cancun (alas I was alone - not much fun)
year before last I went to Ireland - had a great time
Last year I just drove through New Mexico and saw Carlsbad, Chaco Canyon and a few other places - really enjoyed it...

    This year...????

  • Tell me more about your NM trip. We're big fans but have mainly been to Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque.

  • Just a leisurely drive from OKC to Carlsbad (the town) through Lubbock, met some great people at the hotel... went to the Caverns the next day and took 2 self guided tours... Then I spent some time in the Guadalupe (sp) mountain area, hiking and watching the sceanery - I lived in El Paso for years as a kid and spent time in Southern NM while in the Army so it was almost like going home...

Then I drove up to Chaco Canyon which is not near ANYTHING... Through Albuquerque ... stopping when I wanted to look at something - no time schedule - just driving and stopping when I felt like it...

Chaco was pretty interesting - though the 13 mile long dirt road leading to it was the worst washboard road I've ever been on! There was no speed I could find (fast or slow) that made it any better - so take a rental not your own car! I swear I thought I would loosen a bumper or something!!

Then I had planned on driving up to Utah to see Arches park - but ran short on both time and memory in my camera (forgot to take something to down load the pics so they had to stay in the camera - and did'nt feel like driving back down to Albuquerque to buy a new memory stick...

Just a nice leisurely drive with no time table - not much of an itenerary (except to a few places i did want to see)...

  • Thank you, Carlsbad sounds interesting, do you think it would be good with a baby?

    ss182

  • A baby? Probably not as enjoyable... Strollers don't work well on all of the pathways so there would be areas where you could not get one on the main tours... A small (but walking) child would get tired as the combined trails are a couple miles long... As far as the environment, it is a bit damp and cool - the air is sometimes a bit 'musty'...

I'm not sure what the 800' elevator ride would do to a babies ears (if you decided not to walk in)...

  • why, do you want to have one ?

I have taken the same trip . Went to carlesbad, went to albuque. Went to billy the kids grave. Went to the farmington area. Peublos are interesting. Animas river is cool. went on into colorado to the pueblos there, that was the coolest of all. good trip. Dont get low on gas and be sure to have a spare tire.

forgot about Bandlier national park......it is the coolest polace in NM, it and Taos

  • This photo (if the danged thing attaches) is the main walk-in entrance of Carlsbad... The camera is pointed down at a pretty steep angle, so you can see that a small child or a stroller might have 'an interesting time of it'...

Okay... I've tried 5 times to attach a photo - both directly from my PC and from photobucket... nothing is working... is this feature deleted?

Final edit: Finally got the danged thing working!

  • I'll be stuck in Norman....working....because this place never stops.

  • I would think that a mod could 'tele-work'... Actually I thought all you guys were sitting on the beach in Tahiti sucking down Mai-tai's... biggrin

    Taun

  • That is a great pic & you are right, it looks like it would be difficult with a stroller. Maybe that trip should wait for a few more years. My little girl will be 6 months old on Monday, so I'm trying to think of something that would be good for her too. :)
