Tulsa World: Article on physician shortage (link)

  • The reason we won WW2 was because of our greater industrial capability. And now we cant figure out how to increase the number of people in med school to become doctors in our country ? How about as a country, we take care of our country first.

If you want to be a PA, lets start in HS. Take math and science classes. Enroll in a college as a premed on a 2 year degree. Of course the med schools would have to change their rules, God forbid, to admit people with a 2 year premed degree. Do PA's really need to know history, goverment, literature, and the BS courses required for a 4 year degree? If they made that change, that would greatly increase the number of qualified students and also free up space in undergrad universities . Now the med schools need to do their part and increase their enrollment, say triple it. Is it too hard to build a building and hire instructors for an increased enrollment ? Remember, this is America. We can do it.

Do I really need a doctor that can quote Shakesphere while taking my blood pressure ? Or do I need a doctor who can take my blood pressure and know when their is a problem?

As for the 4 year med schools, if a student came in with the science and math background, why couldnt the program be a 3 year instead of 4? That would increase enrollment 25 percent right there. And maybe we dont even have to build new buildings. Why can the med schools utilize HS campuses for night classes. They arent being used at night now anyway, Couldnt they double or triple enrollment by utilizing that "free" space?

So whats the problem? The problem is our educators are set in their ways and there is no leadership to get them off high center.

The education lobby in DC has a strong interest in maintaining the status quo. Tenure, increasing tuition, lavish scholarships paid for by taxpayers and other students, just the same academia that we know about. OU's president is a true professional academic. Starts with I think a Rhodes Scholarship and traces right on through. He's a nice guy. And he really knows how to schmooze. He's totally into raising teaching salaries, lavish scholarships, raising tuition.

Since he's a huge Sooner fan, and a nice guy, it's hard to get real upset. But it's ok to point out that he is a true product of ACADEMIA. He loves the process. True, he's raised some money. But imo OU grads and friends would generously contribute to help OU out with any number of competent leaders in Evans Hall. The president gets some credit, sure. But other guys could have raised money, too.

You just validated what I have been saying. The system is screwed up. Was the guy who applied 4 times a better candidate than he was the first time he applied. If the books are the same, why not just have med school as graduate school and increase the number of residency programs. Then we overcome the self made shortage

  • It makes me want to puke orange everytime I get my tax bill and I see what OUr great leaders do with it.

You put me in charge and I'll have a 2 year pre med program in every dam college we have. And if these med schools want my research money, then they will play by my rules. My rules are you change your program to 3 years. So you add a chapter to every book. I dont care how you do it, just get it done. And the public HS classrooms and auditoriums are yours to use. The med school pays nothing. Triple the enrollment within 4 years, so lets get started now. If you are a nay sayer or drag your feet thrying to make it not work, you're fired. And I'm sure we will have to fire a few that resist the change. Final rule, student population has to be 90 percent American. Tax paying Americans. No freeloaders from foreign countries. I do believe with the ecomonies of scale the cost would go down also. I would shoot for a 25 percent reduction in cost and be happy with 20.

Any comment on the Doctor of Osteopathy D.O. programs? As I understand, there is a D.O. school in Tulsa.

How about this: OU should double the size of the OU Med School admission? In general, could the faculty and facilities handle twice as many students? I think there are enough qualified and bright and energetic students. Thoughts? .

I wonder why the med schools artificially limit the number of admissions so severely. There are other smilar situations to the one discussed above.

  • Common sense responses. Makes sense. My take away is maybe OUHSC could use moderate expansion of facilities and maybe faculty in order to meet the health needs of Oklahoma. Also, I think long term the future of PA's is bright. The amount of information available on the internet and the access to information with convenient tools will increase the good options available to people.
