TOPEKA, Kan. -- A controversial Kansas church is changing its protest plan after an incident in Oklahoma last week.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church said they want revenge after someone slashed the tires on their van during visit to protest a military funeral in McAlester. The group said it plans to now target funerals for Oklahoma children.

The group said it planned to picket the funeral of an 8-year-old Burneyville girl who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week, although no protesters were seen near the services. The group said it would be in Owasso on Thursday to protest the funeral of a girl who died in a car crash.

The Westboro Baptist Church's website now reads "God Hates Oklahoma" and "The Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma's children and casting them into hell. Thank God for more dead children in Oklahoma."

  • Pathetic. I don't think I could keep my cool if they showed up at a funeral for any child. Much appreciation to the counter-Westboro group which follows them and disrupts their protests. If the counter-group had enough people (as in, hundreds) I'd bet the Westboro members would eventually give up.

  • I really think that the end goal of the people in this group is martyrdom. They're edging closer and closer to pushing someone over the edge.

I hope their end goal is martyrdom.
And I hope somebody makes those dreams come true.

  • Wanting marterdom or not, they are going to go too far sooner or later. I know too many Okies who would simply loose it if this group showed up to protest their little kid's funeral.

I hate to say it, and I don't want it to happen, but I can't see any other end than someone eventually getting violent on them.

  • This has disaster written all over it. It will be interesting to see if they actually show up in Owasso today to protest a child. Hopefully this was just an empty threat because if they start protesting Oklahoma children then they will eventually run out of luck and someone is going to go off on them and a tragedy will take place.

They better stay away from SE Oklahoma because us folks down here won't act to kindly to a child's funeral being protested.

  • It really is time for the government to do something about this. Simply put protesting funerals off limits. Make it a law.

The funny thing is, now God hates Children, but we were once all children and we are all Children of God.

  • If they were smart, they would stay clear of Oklahoma, but they obviously aren't smart. They should have learned their lesson at McAlester. The rest of the U.S. can make fun of Oklahoma all they want, but people stick together and take care of each other here. This won't end well if they don't drop it and stay out of the state.

  • Total nut jobs. What's sad is they take their kids and are teaching them to be just like them... I agree with previous posters. Don't be going to Little Dixie and causing trouble. You will live (or not) to regret it...

  • These people are real life Trolls. I've been to a counter protest before, and while it was a blast to shout obscenities, it did nothing to derail them. It's tough to say what the real solution is, but at this point it's obvious that counter protests don't affect them.

  • I would love to invite them to SE DC! If they made it to the funeral I really doubt they would make it out. I cant believe no one has done anything to these people yet.
