My dissertation (which i defended three weeks ago) was on file-sharing among college students.
On that note, i truly believe that no matter what the RIAA/MPAA does to combat file-sharing, there will always be adaptations that skirt the law. The RIAA/MPAA does not have the money or time to target everyone. They tried unsuccessfully to target college students with lawsuits and some studies show that file-sharing actually increased after their efforts.
If i was them i'd do two things. 1) specifically target ISPs and attempt to get legislation passed that places greater responsibility on ISPs to identify illegal file-sharing. 2) focus more efforts on educating youth/teachers/parents on why file-sharing is considered copyright infringement. The RIAA/MPAA missed out on an important opportunity to focus more on education rather than punitive punishments when they were able to get Napster shut down. The kids who were using Napster at that time (elementary and junior high kids) are now college students and young adults who are still continuing in their file-sharing behavior because they a) don't think they can be caught, b) don't see any real repercussions, c) believe they are an anonymous participant, d) don't see file-sharing as a moral dilemma, and e) find it absurd to purchase something they can get for free.
