Tablet, Notebook, or Laptop

  • I am looking for a new internet browsing device for home use.

We have a laptop (Dell) and each have a smartphone (mine is a Samsung Captivate Android phone and she has an Iphone).

While the ability to open and save an occasional excel or word document would be a nice perk the new device will be used almost exclusively for internet browsing. We do not play any types of games or watch any movies other than a you-tube clip or news story here and there. The new device will go with us on some vacations, but will be used mostly at home where we have a wireless network. In the future we might use the device as an e-reader if that was an option, but that is definitely not a priority.

So my question is what is best for me? A tablet, notebook, or laptop.
And does anyone have specific device recommendations?

    OUrj

  • I would get an iPad, I love them! My husband got to test one for work and it was the perfect coffee table computer. It would also be fantastic for traveling and would be the perfect e-reader. I'm unsure about the details of word or excel but, I do know if you are emailed those type of documents you can open and view them on your iPad.

Ps. I miss seeing oupinkkitty around. :)

  • If you have a laptop or other computers around if you need serious Microsoft Office or other applications, then by all means, a tablet would be a logical choice for an internet appliance.

The caveat is of course, is that you say "only an internet appliance" now, and then later lament the lack of a hard keyboard & mouse, microsoft office, etc... Tablets are not for heavy keying.

With that said, an iPad would be a good choice. But there are a number of recent entries into the tablet marketspace. There are a number of Android tablets. HP has a WebOS tablet. The motorolla XOOM is an interesting device. Take your time, and do your home work.

Let us know how it turns out!

  • Does a tablet allow any use of word or excel? Not for large documents or a ton of storage. Just a few spreadsheets and word documents?

Penn Square has an Apple store, you should check it out. You would be able to play with an iPad and ask all your questions.

  • I am going to Best Buy today to look and ask questions.

I am hoping to find something other than the Ipad.

Motorola Xoom, Toshiba Thrive, HP Touchpad, and Samsung Galaxy seem to be the best options.

Maybe the Acer Iconia because the price is nice and reviews are good.

Thank you for the quickoffice tip!

  • Thanks SS.
The Toshiba Thrive was already a long shot and based on those reviews I will probably ignore it altogether.

I am not familiar with the webos software that HP uses. That will put it behind the Android devices to start because I am familiar with that system.

Sounds like for the price Acer could be the way to go but I will need to compare it to the Xoom and Galaxy.

  • After playing with the different options and discussing with a sales person at Best Buy over lunch I think for $100 cheaper I will go with the Acer which uses Android.

    May purchase tonight!

    OUrj

  • Up and running.
    Woohoo!

    OUrj

  • I am looking at the Acer also, I see that Bestbuy is giving a $100 gift card with purchase making it $299. Did they give you the gift card with it? Not sure if that's an online only offer or not.

    ou1987

  • Yes I did get the gift card with it in the store in Norman!
It has only been 2 days, but so far i am really liking it.

I put quickoffice on it first thing and have been playing around with excel. It will take some getting used to, but will definitely be more than functional!
For the price I just could not justify buying anything else.

    OUrj

  • Glad you are enjoying it - always better when you don't regret these kinds of purchases. biggrin

I'm still content with my laptop and Kindle but may reconsider a tablet in a few years. Right now, I think the laptop is still what I need because I do much more than just browse the web. I tried typing on a tablet once and quickly lost patience with it.

  • I have an Acer Acona 500 and like it a lot. The Acer supports flash and has USB ports. It is very adept at the internet and email is a snap. Also have a Verizon Hot Spot and that comes in handy while on the road and/or in and out of airports.

The Acer does everything I want out of a tablet.

How's this working out for you?

I am thinking about doing the same thing; getting a tablet but I want something I can create word documents with. I can't make up my mind on which tablet to get though.

    SoonerX

  • It is working quite nicely.
    QuickOffice has been very useful.
The price on the Acer is right.

    OUrj

  • If you plan to do much editing in excel save very regularly!
I have been having frequent forced closes in excel while editing very simple sheets.

    OUrj

  • Apparently HP marked their tablets down to $99, when they announced that they were no longer making them. I wish I would have acted on that deal!

    ss182

  • I know someone who works there and claims to be in the know.

Apparently they are ridiculously overstocked with tablets. They said they had more tablets than employees.

The hot company rumor is that every employee will get one for Christmas.

    OUrj

  • I have an Iconia (Acer) Honeycomb tab, and its straight beasty! Of course, I did my geeky root, custom kernel, rom etc. its oc'd to 1.6ghz and hitting 3800 quadrant scores.

I can do it all with this tab, quickoffice pro, Wyse pocket cloud, and a few other production apps make me a happy boy

I challenge any ipad against my android tab!!!flex
