***THE OFFICIAL "HELLO WIN COLUMN" THREAD***

  • Sorry, no weak imitations allowed. swirl

The Hello Win Column thread is now in it's 7th year. Named for the signature call
of Ranger Broadcaster Mark Holtz following a Ranger win, it's a year round thread whose
main topic is Texas Ranger baseball, but all baseball talk is welcomed. We keep it civil for the
most part, lot's of great baseball fans of several different teams have posted here over the years.

    The tradition continues.

  • Now we're cooking with gas............

    Ken Rosenthal speculates:

  • If VMart could stay healthy for an entire season, it could make our lineup a monster. I See VMart as a combo 1B/C/DH, and it would give us the big RH bat that RW wanted last season.

His versatility would be a plus, his plate defense is horrid, he's pretty much in the bottom 5% of all MLB catchers. Probably looking at a primary !B/DH candidate with some relief stints behind the plate from time to time.

    Soonerloud102

  • That's pretty much what I thought. So who's our primary catcher?

    Olivo? Torrealba(sp?)???

    QRISooner

  • I like Olivio, he's pretty good behind the plate, probably the best defensive free agent catcher out there.

    Soonerloud102

  • I forgot about John Buck. He's been discussed.....

VMart would bring some real decent flexibility. Can we roll with Treanor (I know he's a FA, but he'd be an easy sign) and VMart??? Or would we also need a 3rd guy with VMart catching very little?

  • cheers I figured out how to get the emoticons.

How do you get your sig line on posts? I'm simple minded. I need guidance.

  • FWIW

Theo Epstein just did a conference call with the beat writers.

    • In strong terms, he said the Red Sox want Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez back and are pursuing them. Epstein said media reports portraying anything else are inaccurate.

On Victor Martinez: "Victor would certainly be our first choice to be our 2011 catcher and beyond. He did an outstanding job for us in the year and a half he was here and we’d certainly be comfortable with him coming back and have been pursuing him.

"I know its been portrayed in the media a little bit as if we haven’t been pursuing him. But that’s really between us and Victor and his agents. We absolutely want this guy back and he knows that. He’s known that for a while. We’ll see if something can be worked out. Things happen in free agency."

They may have disabled the sig feature. Some of the sigs were taking up four times as much room as the content of the post was. You had to scroll quite a bit just to read a few posts. Hopefully they can get things scaled a little better.

  • Newberg Report:

(* Trade Rumor Offerings To Chew On For Fun, Even Yuks)

Not to be confused with Brewers journeyman reliever Todd Coffey, the TROT COFFEY is a mailing list-only update on various trade and free agent rumblings unearthed, if not hatched, by the media:

    · According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star: “The word from Texas, which is swimming in money from a new TV deal, is the Rangers plan to make a pitch for Zack Greinke regardless of whether they succeed in retaining free-agent lefty Cliff Lee”

    · According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star: “The word from Texas, which is swimming in money from a new TV deal, is the Rangers plan to make a pitch for Zack Greinke regardless of whether they succeed in retaining free-agent lefty Cliff Lee”

    · Yes, I typed that twice.

    · Lots of teams will be in on Greinke. Lots. But he can veto deals to half the league, many of which will be contenders who can afford him, and just like July, when Texas had the one player that Seattle decided it had to have for Lee, the Rangers still have two or three young players who could fit that profile when the Royals are facing off with their really big decision.

    · Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated thinks the package for Greinke would probably need to include two young starting pitchers and one hitter. That’s a good profile for Texas in terms of setting up a potential match. Royals GM Dayton Moore has evidently hinted that he would need two “can’t miss prospects” and a young big league pitcher. Again, not a problem per se.

    · ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick polled 17 general managers, assistant GM’s, player personnel officials, and scouts, 11 of whom predicted Lee will sign with the Yankees. Five said Texas. One said the Angels.

I’m guessing Lee hasn’t told of any of the 17 what he’s going to do.

    · Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that Texas has the financial muscle to sign both Lee and catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez, one of my favorite hitters in baseball. He’d be a spectacular add.

And here’s something else about that. Lee and Martinez were teammates in Cleveland from 2002 through 2009 (the exact Indians tenure for both players). And with AA Akron in 2002, where Martinez caught Lee’s debut in the Indians system. And with AAA Buffalo in 2003, where Martinez caught Lee’s first three starts that season with that club. Yes, Kelly Shoppach was Cleveland’s primary catcher in 2008, when Lee won the Cy Young, but here’s a rundown of who has caught Lee the most in his career:

    1 game Paul Hoover, PHI

    1 Adam Moore, SEA

    3 Carlos Ruiz, PHI

    3 Taylor Teagarden, TEX

    3 Matt Treanor, TEX

    7 Tim Laker, CLE

    9 Paul Bako, PHI

    9 Bengie Molina, TEX

    10 Rob Johnson, SEA

    12 Josh Bard, CLE/SEA

    61 Kelly Shoppach, CLE

    106 Victor Martinez, CLE

Add another pitch point to the recruitment: All other things equal (which is not to suggest that they will be), does Lee want to pitch to some combination of Martinez, Molina, Treanor, and Teagarden? Or some combination of Francisco Cervelli, Austin Romine, Jesus Montero, and Jorge Posada?

I love the idea of Lee and Martinez as a package deal here (though by the end of the contract Martinez would certainly be DH’ing or spotting at first base). Love it.

That said, Detroit is rumored to be dead set on signing Martinez, Boston would like to bring him back, and Baltimore, Colorado, Seattle, and Toronto are believed to be among those interested as well.

    · John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus reiterates the Texas interest in Martinez and adds that the Rangers are considering catcher Ramon Hernandez as an alternative. Perrotto also adds Texas to the mix for free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.

    · Perrotto adds that Jeff Francoeur “has a good chance of landing with the Phillies,” though Colorado is interested as well, and of course Kansas City has been rumored for months as being a possible destination for the outfielder.

    · Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports that Texas is believed to have interest in free agent lefthander Jorge de la Rosa. Lots of other teams, including the Yankees (if they don’t land Lee) and Washington and Milwaukee and Pittsburgh, will be in on the 29-year-old.

    · The Yankees, according to Rosenthal, expect reliever Kerry Wood to sign somewhere else.

    · The Rangers signed journeyman catcher Kevin Cash to a minor league contract, and re-signed infielders Guilder Rodriguez and Travis Adair and righthander Chris Mobley to minor league deals.

    · Buck Showalter hired Rick Adair to be the Orioles’ bullpen coach.

  • I've read in more that a few places that Derek Holland is one of the players that KC is highly interested in.

Lots of stuff on that. Holland would be on the top of their list. It will probably take Holland/Hunter, Martin Perez, decent bat, another top prospect. Possibly more......if I could keep Holland and send them Hunter, I'd prefer that. Its going to be a steep price, but the window is open now and it won't stay this wide open for more than 2, 3 years. Some folks think we're set up for 10 years of dominance and that just isn't likely. So I'd go all in now......

Any concerns about Greinke's mental health issue's. He's never pitched in the post season. Could he handle it????

I have concerns there. I can't decide how big my concerns are.....

  • Clint Hurdle named Pirates manager

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5805316

The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired former Colorado Rockies manager and Texas Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle as manager, Sports Illustrated reported on its website.

Hurdle, who was a candidate for the vacant New York Mets managerial position, takes over a Pirates team that lost 105 games last season and hasn't had a winning season since 1992. The Pirates fired former skipper John Russell after three consecutive last-place finishes.

The team is expected to officially announce the hire on Monday, according to the report.

With Hurdle as hitting coach, the Rangers led the majors in hitting with a .276 team batting average on the way to their first World Series.

Hurdle managed the Colorado Rockies from 2002-2009, leading the Rockies on a memorable late-season run to the 2007 World Series, where they were swept by the Boston Red Sox. He posted a 534-625 record and only one winning season in Denver.

  • I was just coming in to post the Hurdle news. We knew there was a good chance of this when he was hired. Still disappointing....

  • We were stuck with Rudy for 15 years, and now have success with Hurdle, who was greatness. And he leaves for the Pirates.

Oh well. I trust management and The old school brother to fill the vacancy with someone great.
