Relocate to Dallas- where to live?

  • My family and I are looking to a possible relocation to Dallas. Although we make the drive from South Tulsa to Dallas 3-5 times a year for games, events or a weekend trip, and know the area okay, or more important where to avoid, we aren't really sure to live. Looking for somewhere safe with good schools or small private schools that is close enough to the Tollway (would be working off Tollway and Loop 12), but yet affordable. Okay with living in the suburbs. Any advice would be great.

  • Check out Prosper, Frisco, Aubrey. All nice areas and very close to the tollway.

  • My sister-in-law and in-laws both have homes in Frisco, they all love it there.

  • tollway north of the george bush turnpike will give you plenty of reasonably priced homes and plano schools. that would put you about 30+ minutes away from your job, depending on traffic. frisco is super reasonable, but it's way the heck up there (at least to me).

we recently bought a house and looked in plano, but settled somewhere closer to downtown where i work. but, you can certainly get nice home in plano for a good price.

  • Highland Park, Southlake, Colleyville, Westlake any of these would do just fine.

  • I am a big fan of the Frisco Area. I don't live there but work close by. They have three sports teams, minor league baseball, minor league hockey, and a major league soccer. They have a large mall area with tons of restaurants and stores. Also, a great school system. Frisco has two major highway systems going through it so you can get anywhere pretty easy. Homes are little on the pricey side but in today's market there may be some bargains out there.

  • I have a curious affinity for Frisco. Go figure.

  • The ND Tollway and 121 is a mess right now. I'm not sure how much longer construction will go on, but it certainly makes the commute a pain.
114 on the north side of the airport is a huge construction nightmare.
Though there are back roads you can take around this, a lot of other people are doing this too.

Be aware that all of the school districts are experiencing a financial crisis, thanks to Austin. What looks like a great district now may not be in such good shape next year. Some make the front page, but they are all in trouble.

Personally, I would rent for a year and then buy. That way you can figure out what areas you like and how you deal with traffic. We don't measure distance in miles, but use minutes instead.

I agree. I would rent for the first year as well.

  • I am relocating to Dallas at the end of the Month. I had narrowed it down to Frisco, McKinney and Allen as well (I lived in McKinney my first go round). I ended up buying in StoneBridge Ranch in McKinney. It is close to 121 so you can take it to catch the tollway or if you want to go to Dallas you can just hop on 75. You really can't go wrong with either of those. I just got a great deal on a house in McKinney so I could not pass that up.

I really like Frisco though since it is central to the tollway. What sucks about Frisco is if you want to go anywhere else you really have to take a toll road to get there.

  • All of those areas are nice, but the problem is...if you've noticed...everyone has listed same. Nothern areas are very crowded, high schools huge, stores packed, streets very busy, commutes via I-75 and the tollway a pain. Since you work near the Tollway and Loop 12 I'd check out some of those areas. There are plenty of great private schools - all religious affiliations - and many homes that have either been remodeled/renovated or pushed over and rebuilt. Inside 635 and even outwards towards Farmers Branch (golf course area) are nice. When you get too close to I-35 going west, you'll know. I grew up Hillcrest, Northhaven, Royal Ln area in N Dallas, you could try that area as well, but prices are really high now.

Could also try the mid-cities. Commute to your area are only 25 min or less via 183 east that is (edited). We love it here.

  • here are mine in order:
    1. Plano- best schools. easy access to downtown via Hwy 75, Tollway, or Preston. Good housing choices at different $
    2. Frisco- all new home construction last 10 years. infrastructure lacking but getting done. Schools ok.
    3. Allen - only downtown access hwy 75. Growing new areas W of 75. alot of housing choices.

Plano doesn't have the best schools.... East Plano is awful.... West Plano is the place to be in the Plano area. Wife and I have been in real estate here in the Dallas area for the past 10 years. Frisco has great schools. The main difference between Frisco, Allen and Plano is graduating class size. Frisco will have about 400 to 600 per graduating class where Plano will have about 1200 and Allen even more than that. Allen has 1 high school... all about the football power. Plano has 3. Frisco... already has 6 high schools.

If you need any more info... feel free to PM me.
