Obama takes big step on Gay Marriage

I'm surprised it's taken this long honestly. We really should have advanced beyond legalizing bigotry against gays by now.

  • The surprise for me is that it took Obama this long. His campaign promises on this issue indicated to me that this sort of move would have happened within his first 6 months in office. The gay community has been clamoring for more action from Obama...and this very well could be a reaction to that pressure.

It's all part of the political wave. He's been down and out of voters' minds. This puts him back up.

It puts him up in their minds but where does it put him in the polls. Bold move IMO.

  • So Obama says one thing to get elected then goes 180 after the election?
I am shocked. Why do voters keep allowing politicians (I know, Obama isn't the first) get away with this.

    So much for:
    Transparency
Posting legislation for 5 days before he signs.
Broadcasting the legislative process on CSPAN.
Bi-partisanship. (Dems won the 2008 election - Republicans live with it, go to the back of the bus)
Bi-partisanship. (Republicans won in 2010, now they should compromise with me in the spirit of Bi-partisanship)
Republicans need to be more civil in their discourse. (If they bring a knife to a fight, we'll bring a gun)
I don't know the facts of the situation, but the police acted stupidly.
The government has to balance their budget just like American families have to. (cough, cough)
I am not the President of the blue states or the red states, I am the President of all the states.
American families can cut back in lots of ways, like in eating out less or taking fewer vacations. (Got Air Force One ready yet?)

Ok, I'll quit because I am just going to make the cool aid drinkers even more upset.

  • Hmm interesting. Congress passes a law. and the executive branch decides on it's own without judicial review by the supreme court to deem it unconstitutional and not enforce the law.

This sets a very bad president Picking and choosing which law to enforce is a very slippery slope and circumnavigates the balance of power this country was built on

    Sends a very negative message

shouldn't be a surprise. this is what radical leftists do. when it doesn't their agenda then to hell with the law

  • Obama has just shot himself in the foot with his mouth. This will cost him bigtime in the 2012 election. The majority of people (voters) live in the "flyover states" and the flyover states do not approve of gay marriage or gay rights. Obama lama dingdong is highest in the polls in the northeast and in Hawaii. That's it.

When the pres takes the oath he swears to uphold and defend the Constitution and the laws of the land. Pres Clinton signed the marriage amendment in 1998 - so it is the law of the land.

    Yes. I do.

  • I find it disgusting too. I also find the thought of marrying a fat woman disgusting or marrying one who's 30 years older than me.

The point isn't what we find disgusting though, its doing what's right and not discriminating against people who were born gay from having the same rights as everyone else.

What is so wrong with having gay marriage legal? You can still hold to your bigot beliefs and think it's wrong. Your church can still condemn it and not recognize it as a true marriage. That's the American way, equal rights for everyone, church and state separate and the freedom to be a bigot.

I find obese people disgusting but I do not find it disgusting that two fat people would get married or even have sex. I don't find gay people disgusting but I do find two gay men having sex disgusting.

Who determines what's "right" in America?

I think the US government should determine that and basically they have but Obama, by himself, chose to allow Americans not to follow what was "right". Would it be OK for Obama to tell the IRS not to go after people who don't pay or cheat on their taxes?

If people don't want to follow what's "right" in America then there are other countries who may have decided that those specific things are "right" and those people would be allowed to do those specific things in they were a member of that country.

If America decides to allow people to have same sex marriages I won't be happy with it and I won't agree with it. I personally don't think that same sex marriages are "right". I don't think it's discrimination that i feel that way either. I don't like the fact that my father and mother smoke but I still love them and support them. I don't like the fact that my cousin is gay but I support and love her just the same. I don't belittle her or make her feel less than a human or even less than myself.

  • Here's the point you're missing. America has already determined gay marriage is "right" and that's why Obama is making this move.

Granted we don't have a specific federal law that says gay marriage is legal but we have countless others that say discrimination is wrong. We also have laws and a general legal tradition that all citizens should have the same rights.

Not allowing gay marriage is discrimination. Gays do not chose to be that way, they are simply born different. Not allowing them to marry is denying them the same basic benefits you and I enjoy.

I'm sure the people who believed in Jim Crow laws didn't think they were discriminating either. The bottom line, you're on the wrong side of history. 100 years from now your descendants will look at gay marriage bans and think, "What was wrong with us, I thought we were supposed to be the good guys."

  • Its all about money and how to tie another small minority section of the US to their voting pool. Dems can't win over the majority so the seek out and solicit votes from several minority groups to build their voting base.

Squeaky wheels get the grease and that is why minority groups gravitate to the deems. They get oiled. Problem conservatives have is that we are the majority and for the most part content. We don't unite or organize well enough for our voice to be heard. The recent tea party helped our voice but seems to have toned down since the elections Meanwhile minority voices still scream out and the Dems take advantage

    no...they are not "born different"....
    there is no scientific proof....
but there are studies that show homosexuality is a result of one's "environment"....

it's nice that you believe differently....but you've been lied to....
don't try to pass it off as fact..

  • Hmmm scientific proof that gays are born this way, how about the testimony of millions of gay people who say exactly that.

Where's your proof they aren't born that way? Here's a hint, the Bible doesn't count and neither does your "opinions".

I'm sure there are some people who aren't actually born gay but pretend to be for whatever reason (women who think it's sexy for example) but these are not the type of people who really want to get married.

There's no point in arguing either way. The crux of the argument is about civil liberties. Should gays be allowed to marry? If you believe in individual rights, YES.

The bigger question should be, why is the government involved with marriage to begin with? Marriage was originally a religious function, so let the churches decide on who they want to marry. And yes, there are thousands that would gladly accept and marry gays.

sorry but testimony of gays does not = scientific proof...

i guess we could just ask the child molesters and the drunks and the thieves and the murderers and the drug addicts if they were all "born that way"......

Politics today are disgusting. They barter for votes for their own selfish gain and egos compromising national security, freedom, liberty and prosperity in the process.

While I don’t believe in legislating morality, I also believe there are some things such as homosexuality which cannot be officially legitimized by government. I have known gay people and have always gotten along well with them. I do not believe I have to accept their sexual preferences as being RIGHT in order to
    co-exist peaceably.

Only the extremely liberal mind can rationalize homosexuality as being 100% healthy, right, and natural. Nature itself proves without a doubt that it is most unnatural. It is an aberration in human nature and yet today it is being fostered and even promoted in schools.

Simple logic would tell you something is not at all RIGHT when you have people struggling with it trying to overcome this unnatural urge and desire. No one has to tell these people it is wrong. Their own conscience convicts them.

Only today in a climate of fake and superficial tolerance and being PC, are such things not considered wrong, or unnatural. The only thing today that seems to be okay to hate is Christians and their message of truth. It is even okay to say we are haters for saying that this kind of thing is wrong. The concept of loving people and simply hating the wrongs that people do is somehow inconceivable. I love my daughter very much but I hate it when she does something wrong. Out of love I appropriately discipline or admonish her to do right. In the same way a believer wants to point out things that are wrong knowing that they are generally harmful and destructive to themselves and others.
