Need help with vacation ideas...

  • I'm taking a vacation in the last two weeks of July and really have no friken idea where to go...
I don't want to just sit around the homestead, but want to stay stateside this year (or at least in the Northern part of this hemisphere...)

Any suggestions...? It would - unfortunately - be just me...

  • You a baseball fan?
If so I bet over a 2 week span with some careful planning you could hit quite a few parks - fly into socal for dodgers padres and angels. Drive up the coast for A's and Giants. Good times. Great scenery!

  • Not a tremendously huge baseball fan - though I might make it to a game while on vacation... I don't think I want to rush around getitng from park to park in time for the next game...

I enjoy traveling, and seeing the scenery - and yeah the Cali coast is pretty, but I don't think I want to be tied to a time table... (except for getting back home of course...)

  • Santa Fe, NM: the weather is cooler, pretty scenery, and great food. You could go fishing, river rafting, golfing, hiking, hot air ballooning, museums, etc.

    That sounds pretty interesting...

I lived in El Paso for a while as a kid - and was stationed at White Sands ... so I'm somewhat familiar with that part of the world...

  • I just retired so time is no problem for me. Wife and I were going to DC but i'm not sure if we can get White House tour tickets. So i'm trying to talk her into a Key Largo trip!

  • Santa Barbara is pretty cool. Very temperate weather. Ocean and mountains all together. Go on a whale watching excursion. Great food.

I like Chicago. Plenty to do.

I've always wanted to see what it was like in the New York mountains and the finger lake area.

Go to one of the telescopes in California.

  • Club Med Florida...like a cruise, but without the ship.

If you want the beach, go to Sarasota(Lido, Longboat or Siesta Key). You can just lounge at the beach, play golf or tennis, go to a Rays game, go to Busch Gardens, go fishing, etc.

Go to NYC. Visit 30 rock, tour grand central station, ground zero, statue of liberty, etc. Catch some Broadway shows. Go to a Mets or Yankees game.

  • If you want to go radical, try the northward national parks tour. There are Mesa Verde and Rocky Mountain in Colorado and Teton and Yellowstone in Wyoming. Then go northwest to Glacier in Montana and it's adjoining park in Canada - Waterton. From there you could go a little farther north to some of the most dynamic (scenerywise) Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay. These four parks adjoin each other and are absolutely stunning.

If you're really getting into seeing national parks at that point, you could pick up two more in Canada by going a little farther west, Glacier National Park (the one in Canada) and Mount Revelstoke National Park.

That should cure you of wanting go get away from the old homestead for awhile!!

The wife and I went on a trip some time back that included 16 national parks, all in the western US. We took our time (two and a half months) and drove a total of 8,300 miles. It was a trip that neither of us will ever forget. We also did a few extras on that trip like the narrow gauge between Durango and Silverton, Monument Valley, Vegas, and the real topper - the little lady won 5G's on a slot machine as we were passing through North Tahoe.

Whatever you decide, have fun and stay safe!!

I had toyed with the idea of going to Yellowstone - or Devils Tower, so this is something I could do... though I only have two weeks , not two months...

  • Destin, Florida. The sand looks and feels like sugar and the ocean is beautiful and blue. Just don't sit out too long without some strong sun block or you will be on the menu at AJ's oyster bar.

    Now watch this drive.

  • After thinking about it for a while - and reading your suggestions - I think I've decided to take a southwestern 'tour' and go to Carlsbad Caverns, Chaco Canyon and Arches National park in Utah...

These sites are part of my "bucket list" and this is a good opportunity to 'check them off'...

Its about 2200 miles - but I won't be in a hurry so it won't be that bad...

I'll be able to overnight in motels everywhere but Chaco Canyon - and I can camp out there...
(I like camping - when it's my idea not the Armys!)...

It's not cast in stone yet - but it is at least cast firmly in Jell-o...

  • I would add Zion and Bryce and drop Carlsbad.....
