Sooner Nation remembers Steve Davis

The Sooner Nation is mourning the loss of OU great Steve Davis. During Davis' tenure as Oklahoma's starting quarterback, the only contests that the Sooners didn't win were a 7-7 tie at No. 1 USC in 1973 and a 23-3 setback to Kansas in 1975. Davis was the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the 1976 Orange Bowl as the Sooners registered a 14-6 win over Michigan to capture the 1975 national championship with an 11-1 record. During the 1974 campaign, the Sooners led the nation in scoring, averaging 43 points per game as OU finished the season as the only undefeated team in the country at 11-0.

Davis compiled a record of 32-1-1 and won two National Championships for Oklahoma and Coach Barry Switzer. The Sooners also won three straight Big 8 titles with Davis at quarterback from 1973-75.

"This is a tragic loss," said former OU head coach Barry Switzer. "Steve was a tremendous role model for student-athletes everywhere. He was a good student and a fantastic person. He was a minister who traveled across the country inspiring thousands with his message, his words and his lifestyle.

"Steve wasn't highly-regarded when we recruited him," he continued. "We weren't necessarily sure what position he'd play, so we took him as an athlete. The first time I saw him play was in a freshman game I distinctly recall walking down to the field after the game and telling Galen Hall, 'this kid is a talented quarterback.'

"Back then I think we had 250 kids on the roster, and I believe Steve started out about eighth on the depth chart," Switzer concluded. "Of course, we all know that he went on to post a 32-1-1 record and help us win two national championships. Steve was surrounded by great talent on those teams, but he was truly an exceptional leader. I was proud of him. The entire state of Oklahoma was proud of him. We still are."

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops also expressed his gratitude for Davis' many contributions to the legacy of the football program at the University of Oklahoma.

"On behalf of the Oklahoma Football family, we share the sorrow of Sooners everywhere who are mourning the loss of Steve Davis and extend our prayers to Steve's family and many friends," said Stoops. "Steve gracefully carried the hopes and dreams of an entire state on his shoulders as he quarterbacked the University of Oklahoma to back-to-back national championships. While his record of accomplishment on the field will long be remembered, I will always appreciate the personal support and encouragement that Steve provided to me and our student-athletes. He was a man of exceptional character who will be deeply missed."

      .

I first meant Steve when he was a freshman at OU. My brother was the kicker on the OU freshman team and Steve was his holder. At that time no one suspected that Davis would eventually start, much less become OU's winningest QB.

Steve was to be our 'special guest' at last month's recruiting luncheon, just as we've had Marcus Dupree and other former players come and recount their recruiting experiences at OU.

But he called on signing day wanting to know where everybody was! He had forgotten that the recruiting luncheon is held the day AFTER signing day and had had arranged his schedule to come on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Steve was kinda like that from time to time -- focused on ten things at once and occasionally forgetting a minor detail or two.

But he was always the consummate gentleman, kind, articulate and accommodating.

He was currently working on writing some articles for OUInsider on quarterback play in light of this years QB race, and on OU football in general.

Of course none of that matters now.

He wasn't perfect, none of us are, but he tried to live a life as a true follower of Christ. We all remember what he did on the field, but what he did off, and for years after, it what his true legacy will tell.

    • I am still just sick about this. Yesterday was one of the toughest days I can remember. Just the memories of watching Steve play and hearing him preach. A tremendous asset to the program and a great human being. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with his family.

    • I've seen Steve's testimony on an old Billy Graham crusade episode. I think it was a crusade in Lubbock, TX in the 1970's. Great representative for the University.

    • Did very many of the current players get to know Steve? I know Landry did, but I wasn't sure about the rest of these younger guys.

    • I would love to see all of our QB's wear a "5" helmet sticker or chest patch next year. He's the 1st OU QB that I can remember, I was born in 1968. I started going to games in 72. My grandmother always said if I tried hard I could grow up to be like Steve Davis. He was a special Man!

    • Someone earlier mentioned displaying OU flags out of respect for Steve. On Monday I plan on displaying mine in front of my house, and flying my car flags. I think it would be great if others would do the same.
