Blake Bell will compete this offseason for the starting quarterback job.
A new quarterback must emerge as Landry Jones has left for the NFL. The offense will feature more quarterback run game this year than Sooner fans have been accustomed to seeing in the past. Seven starters return, but there will also be opportunities for players that are under the radar to make a big impact in 2013.
Here are three players on offense that could be poised for a breakout season.
Quarterbacks (Blake Bell, Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson): Pretty obvious choice here. But, whoever emerges as the starter will be expected to produce right away. The good news is that the winner will have the talent around him to have a huge season. But, fans won’t be patient if one starts to struggle. All three have great athletic ability which will cause the offense to be tweaked a bit. Expect the quarterback run game to be more of a factor, but the starter will also have to be able to deliver the ball to the talented core of receivers that the Sooners possess.
Alex Ross: The running back core is deep, but there’s no reason to think that Ross can’t climb up the depth chart this off season. Ross redshirted last season, but the 6-1, 204-pounder possess both size and speed that has impressed the coaching staff since he arrived on campus. With both Damien Williams and Brennan Clay returning, it will be tough for Ross to see a significant carries right away. But, if he proves to be effective when his opportunities arise, you could see him get a meaningful number of carries by the end of the season.
Derrick Woods: A crowded receiving core forced Woods to redshirt last season, but, it’s very realistic that Woods will see a quality amount of playing time this season. The 6-1, 185-pound freshman was a four-star prospect from Inglewood, California a year ago. Once again, the receiving group will be crowded, but Woods could very well be this year’s surprise at wide receiver.
