The Sooners raced to a six-point lead just three minutes in, but couldn’t sustain it and fell 81-75 to the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames Saturday afternoon.
Guard Buddy Hield netted a career-high 30 points in the loss, knocking down 10-of-18 shots, including 5-for-8 from behind the arc.
Forward Georges Niang led the way for the Cyclones with his 27, while forward Melvin Ejim and guards Matt Thomas and Monte Morris all joined him in doubles with 22, 13 and 12, respectively.
The game was deadlocked at 37 apiece at intermission, as forward Ryan Spangler’s jumper was ruled a two with his toe on the line at the first half horn.
From there Iowa State opened it up and led by as much as 10 with 8:41 to play.
There were four ties and five lead changes in a game where Iowa State outshot OU 44.4 percent to 40.6 percent.
Despite losing, the Sooners (17-5, 6-3 Big 12) dominated the boards 46-33.
