Millard Talks Scrimmage

The Oklahoma Football team has had two full scrimmages under their belt and things are starting to take shape as to what players will make an impact for this year’s Sooners. One of the most talked about athletes for the past two years has been “all everything” Trey Millard.

Millard has been one of OU’s best and most reliable athletes since he stepped on campus and this year should be no different. Millard was kind enough to stop by and give us his thoughts on OU’s last scrimmage and his opinions of his fellow teammates’ progress thus far.

“I thought as a running back corps, we played pretty well although we got off to a shaky start, we rebounded and ended up playing well and had some good runs,” said Millard.

“As the scrimmage went on, we got a lot sounder in what we were doing and started executing really well.”

OU has a stable of running backs each competing for time on the field this fall and Millard says that each is making progress

“Alex (Ross) is doing well but he still has a ways to go but he is a young guy that has already shown some flashes of some of the great things he can do on the field. He is a big back with a lot of moves in him.”

“Damien (Williams) has been running well, of course he is a lot bigger back and he has had some good downhill runs so far and he has made quite a few plays.”

And what is Millard’s opinion of the big guys up front that will be blocking for him?

“I mean it hurts when you lose guys and the guys we did lose had a lot of experience so that stings but our offensive line has bounced back well and they have played well so far. I think both Adam (Shead) and Bronson (Irwin) have really stepped up but they need to still keep fighting and working hard because they have been inconsistent at times. We have some other guys that are really playing well and I think they will continue to grow and learn and be successful.”

Millard says that his fall camp has been busy as the coaching staff has him moving back and forth from running back to tight end.

“Yea, they have me hopping around everywhere and I have tried several positions but I have mainly been at running back and at tight end,” said Millard. “I feel like I have had a few more touches so far but we are still using most of the same stuff that we used in the spring game. We have expanded on that a little bit and added some new plays and they have used me in those plays a lot more but I am rotating in at fullback as well with Rip (Aaron Ripkowski) and Marshall (Musil).”

Word is out that QB Blake Bell has overtaken fellow teammate Drew Allen as the back-up to All-American Landry Jones. Millard says that although he unsure exactly what the rotation is, Bell is doing some special things and looks really good at this point.

“Blake (Bell) is a great player and he is my roommate so I know a lot about him and we talk all the time, but he has really stepped up and learned our offense and is more comfortable in it,” said Millard. “He has shown that he is more comfortable in the pocket and he has become more consistent in making his reads. As long as he keeps progressing, I think he will be just fine back there.”

Last year, the Sooners were quick out of the gate but faltered at year’s end and Millard says that a lot of it was issues outside of the locker room that was rubbing off and effecting players and their performance on the field.

“I think we learned that you not only have to have consistency on the field but off of it as well,” said Millard. “We had guys that would show up late to practice and not really show that they cared a lot and those guys aren’t with is anymore so we just needed to learn from that and that the difference between a 13 win season and a 10 win season is always doing the little things right and not accepting any mistake as being ok.”
